Foie Gras at the Mozart Cafe (Restaurant?) in Budapest

by k.james

Several years ago, we had wonderful grilled foie gras. We think it was at the Mozart. Is this on your menu?

I haven't had the foie gras at the Mozart but have had it at a couple of places. It's almost the national dish. I know the Mozart and so I will assume that that will be as good as any but Mozart is a bit too touristy for my liking. My favourite is the Central Coffee House - www.centralkavehaz.hu

Enjoy wherever!

Travel Tips for Budapest

The Tabak-Schul

by johngayton

Budapest certainly has an interesting and varied collection of stunning buildings and its Great Synagogue is one that particularly piqued my personal interest.

Well - if it's called the "tobacco school" it would, wouldn't it? (for those that know me LOL!)

But seriously:

This is Europe's largest synagogue, and the second largest in the world (only the Temple Emanu-El in New York is larger). The building was constructed in the mid 1800's under the supervision of the Viennese architect Ludwig Christian Friedrich (von) Förster, who, having failed to find an archetypal "synagogue style", chose to base his design on the Alhambra Mosque. He chose this style as he realised the synergy between the Islamic and Judaic beliefs and the style has often been reused for subsequent synagogues by other architects.

When it was built the area was a predominantly Jewish one and after the German Nazi occupation of the city during World War II the synagogue became one of the borders of the Jewish Ghetto.

Just before the start of the war the building was partially destroyed by a bomb placed by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party and then during the war the Germans occupied it using it variously as a radio station and as a military stables. During the course of the war the synagogue was further damaged on several occasions by Allied air raids and towards the end of the war, during the Siege of Budapest by the Russian Red Army, the building sustained major damage from the Russian shelling of the city.

Left to become derelict during the Communist era the building was finally restored to its original magnificence during the 1990's with a combination of Hungarian government and private funding.

The Great Synagogue is once more a place of Jewish worship and also houses a museum of Hungarian Jewish history as well as a Holocaust Memorial Park.

BTW - The reason it is known as the "Tobacco School" is simply because it on Dohany utca and "dohany" means tobacco!

Budapest Speciality

by cobrioc

Anothervspeciality from Budapest are its diverse wines, and no visit to Budapest is complete without ample wine sampling, perhaps combined with a night at the opera. Vineyard may no longer be found in the capital , but you can get acquainted with the full range of homegrow wines at the House of Hungarian wines, situated among the historic surrounding of Buda Castle.
Here you can sample of the 400 wines which they produce as well.

Toilets

by blint

For some reason many toilets in Hungry and back to front with the drainage part at the very front. Instead of dropping straight down the back part is like a tray. I was very curious as to why this is and thought that it might be made that way so you can exam your stool samples to check and see if all is healthy. When I asked a Hungarian friend she told me Hungarians are obsessed with the 'waste' they produce! Maybe that's just her office colleagues, but the toilet design certainly does help this fascination as it is right there staring back at you!

Mûjégpálya Ice Rink

by cjg1

Ice Skating is the popular thing to do in Budapest. The Mûjégpálya Ice Rink was packed with skaters skating to American music. Bon Jovi music was blaring from the speakers as we watched the skaters go round and round.

A really nice place to visit...

by angel_wing

A really nice place to visit is the Hungarian Open Air Museum in Szentendre, open 9 to 5 every day from April 1 and October 31 (closed mondays except Easter and Whit Monday.) The museum features a village illustrating traditional types of settlements and ways of life from the end of the 18th century to the first third of the 20th century. 'Peasants' in full Hungarian traditional costume demonstrate the old-time ways of life. Gift shops featuring traditional crafts offer some fun shopping. Fun!
