prepaid mobile

by whyyesno

Hello all :)
I need some quick help!
I am traveling to Budapest in a few days and staying for a week. I need a mobile prepaid sim card to use over there, which can be activated to have GPRS (mobile internet... can't live without google maps on my phone :( ). Can you give me some advices on which operator to choose, where to buy a sim card and if it's difficult to activate internet on the mobile phone? I am staying in Erkel utca 20... is there any place near by to shop for a sim card?
Thanks in advance!

yes, I've seen the website. But I don't understand the differences between domino sim and domino quick? They seem like the same thing to me :/ And can they both have internet? And how do you activate it?
Also I am interested in the price of the sim card?

I'll write you some info about the two other operators then. :)

With Telenor a prepaid SIM-card (called Praktikum) costs HUF 3990, and includes a balance of HUF 2500.

Internet should be activated automatically on the card, but the starter package is quite expensive (HUF 13 / 10kB, so HUF 1300 / 1MB). You should rather choose another package that has a monthly fee, but includes some data. You can get 50MB for HUF 590, or 100MB for HUF 990. Both will fit in your starter balance, and the data should be enough for the week you're staying.

You can simply order one of them by sending a text message with "online50mb" or "online100mb" to +36-20-20-20-200.

With Vodafone the prepaid SIM costs HUF 1680, but that doesn't include any starter balance, so you need to top up at least HUF 2000.

Here, a 50MB internet-package costs HUF 1000/month. You can order it by texting "HOBBI" to 1270.

(Could't find an English website for them.)

Travel Tips for Budapest

Local Food

by cjg1

We mostly ate in our hotel. We ventured out for a couple of meals; my Birthday Brunch at the Gellert Hotel and a meal with our friend Istvan. It was easier to order food when with someone who spoke the language but we managed fine at the Gellert by ourselves. The food was interesting and better than we had anticipated.

Margarithe Island

by Antji

This little Island is in the river Donau in Budapest.
There is this beautiful fountain with music from Beethoven (I think). You can relaxe on the green with this music in the background.
On the Island is also a monstery of the princess Margarithe. But it´s just a ruine.
And I can recommend to bring your bathclothes with you because there is a beautiful thermes bath on the Island. It´s outside but it´s very big and lot´s of pools with different temperatures.

Budapest a lively arts

by cobrioc

Budapest central position and experience in welcoming travellers makes it the ideal place to enter Easter Europe.
Budapest has a lively arts, cafe and music scene, and is host to a range of cultural and sporting festivals. Strolling along the riverfront or across romantic bridges, browsing through antique bookshops and jewellery stores.
Budapest has an ample chice of things to do after dark.

Toilets

by ophiro

If you need to go to the toilet while traveling in Budapest there are some chemical or public toilets.

Most of them are very clean and you will have to pay 50-150 forint.

Of course if you are in a hotel , a restaurant or a shopping mall you will not have to pay for entering the toilet.

The Palvolgy Cave

by Natalya2006

Explore the caves in Budapest! It's unusual to see the caves in megapolis.
The Palvolgy Cave is located on Buda side. From the metro station Moskva Ter take a tram 4 or 6 to the end stop of the tram 17 (before the Margit bridge), take a tram 17 to the end station of the bus #85 (I don't remember exactly) and then take a bus to the Palvolgy cave. Or you can take a tram 4 or 6 from the metro station Nyugaty to the end stop of 17th tram (after Margit bridge) and then take a bus.
It's about +10C inside - don't forget a warm sweater!
