The front of the hotel is painted a rather bizarre colour of blue that doesn't do much for the appearance. However, once you pass through the door, the look improves and it gets better the higher you go up.
The architectural mouldings, the ropes on the stairs, the heavy curtains, the gilded mirrors, the details on the cornices, everything spells out old money.
The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated. The windows must be sound proof and the carpet must be very thick because no sound could penetrate through and the days and nights of our stay were pleasantly quiet.
The only minus point I found with Mercure Nemzeti is it has only one elevator. However, the rate of €51 for the double room makes this fault rather trifle.
The desk staffs are very courteous, but they are not very knowledgeable as they could be. We ended up using the concierge at Hilton Hotel for some of our quests on gifts and services available in the city.
Breakfast at Mercure Nemzeti is an elaborate event. Although the price was not included in our room rate, we were very happy to pay €13 for this first meal of the day. The breads are fresh, the fruits are sweet, the pastries are excellent, the cake is decidedly homemade, and each different kind of salad has its own distinctive taste. The hot food is prepared with care and differs daily. There is even very good chocolate mousse, which I attacked with glee.
The restaurant at Mercure serves excellent food at a very reasonable price, and that was where we had our dinner on our last night in the city.
