Budapest Parliament Library, the Orszaggyulesi Konyvtar.

by halikowski

Is the Budapest Parliament Library, the Orszaggyulesi Konyvtar (http://www.ogyk.hu/) open to all people, or just parliamentarians? Librarians at the Central European University Library say you can't just go there, but I don't think the Hungarian aggregate book catalogue MOKKA would list it if it was a private (closed) library.
Thanks for any help,

Hi Stefan,

It says that only the first time you have to make an appointment for registration.
Later you don't have to make an appointment.

It is a public library, open to all Hungarian and foreign nationals older than 18.

Before the first registration, an appointment is needed. You can make it via e-mail at beiratkozas@ogyk.hu or on the phone +36 1 441 4133. Give your name and your passport or ID number. The reason is that you must enter the security area of the Parliament, but entry cards - with which you can enter easily the next time - are only issued inside this area. There is a security check before entry.

Registration is free (and is valid for one year) in case you wish to use the following services:
- catalogues
- computer databases
- reading room
- collection of handbooks
- UN collection
- EU collection.

This means you can not access: the Parliament's Collection and the computer room.

These can only be accessed if you pay for the registration. 1-year student registration costs 1500 HUF, half-year 750 HUF.

Entry to the premises is through Gate IV of the Parliament building. Ask the guards if you can't find your way. They look quite serious, but don't worry, it's their job to look like that :)
By the way, you can find a map on the OGYK website.

Travel Tips for Budapest

Budapest by night

Budapest is in my opinion one of the most beautiful illumintated cities in Europe. So don't miss a walk along the Danube and over the famous Chain Bridge by night. Other well lit sights are the Parliament building, the Buda Castle and the Heroes Square (Hosok tere).

Trying the local food.

by Martin_S.

While we were wandering the streets of Budapest, we saw vendors selling a type of pastry which looked real tasty. It is called Kurtos Kala'cs (Ostia told me the name, thanks Ostia). It is a strip of 5 cm wide pastry, wound and wound around a central core about 40 cm thick to make it look like a spring. It is baked in this way with sugar and cinnamon added, if you see it, try it. When we got our first one, it didn't last till we found the next vendor, MY GOD, WE ATE THE WHOLE THING....!!!!!

Inside the Lehel church

by 1courage

The interior of the church is beautiful, and these tiny resolution and quite dark pics cannot give back the real splendour.
The church internal is very spacious and has 3 naves. The stained glass windows are amazing: they represent saints of the Árpdian dynasty other scenes from Saint Margareth`s life. Also the frescos on the walls, created by Henrik Heintz depict the saint, while those in the sanctuary show the 12 apostles.

The main altar, made by Siklós marble (Hungary`s best quality marble) is work of the artist Lajos Krausz.

Hungarian Movies. Go to see...

Hungarian Movies.
Go to see some new hungarian films, like 'I Love Budapest' or 'Moszkva tér'. Some hungarian films have english subtitles, so get a 'PESTI EST', a free weekly magazine, and check out where there are played.

Szentendre & Visegrad

by VathekNet

Not really off the beaten path, but great day trips north by train from Budapest.

Szentendre is mainly small shopping and a few sites. Relaxing by the river was quite nice.

I made the mistake of arriving @ Visegrad on foot and had to walk up the hill quite a ways. Tested my endurance since I was not dressed for that, but worth the hike. Look for a bus to get up there somehow.
