Car rentals in Budapest

by yankeepeddler

I'll be renting a car at the airport for 3 weeks +/-. I've read a number of stories of unsuspecting tourists, only to be charged hundreds of extra dollars upon return. No shortage of scams. I also notice the "extra" insurance is where they really get you - but it looks like the smart choice.

Any advice on how to proceed? Any good experiences with a particular agency?

AutoEurope is at Ferihegy Airport and is a reliable reputable company we have used many times in Europe, although not at this site specifically. Insurance for a United States resident should be an automatic yes regardless of cost. Get everything they offer - you don't want to be hassling with some guy in a parking lot about a scratch while your plane is taxiing for takeoff. Twice we have had minor damages, not our doing - drive in, smile, walk away - not your problem.

What are your rates?

I had good experience with these two:

http://www.poliprentacar.com

Note, that "polip" has American - market cars, better for us (more familiar models, more powerful engines). But the cars are somewhat older, still OK.

(the new stupid registration taxes are the reason U.S. cars do not appear in Hungary in greater numbers since 2004.)

Don't Forget To Look Down!

Whilst Budapest has some grandly-ornate buildings it's also worth keeping an eye on what's at your feet. Around the city centre you'll notice these decorative manhole covers which I think are those of the local electricity company.

Pest

The pest side is the more recent (and yet still old) part of the city - and the flattest. It's also the part with large streets and boulevards and lavishing old buildings. You can find many important buildings here: the Opera, Saint Stephen's church and - especially - the stunning parliament! This is the part of the city I liked most: it felt very much alive and "breathing" - while Buda seemed a bit too "stuffy" for my taste. Of the buildings here I liked the little details - and in particular the decorated doors! Some were truly amazing!

Tivadar Csontvary Kosztka-WHO?

Janus Pannonius Museum 7621 Pecs, Hungary Kaptalan u. 5 ... This is where you will find and discover this brilliant Painter. Hungary's version of VanGogh; neglected, underrated, and allowed to die in poverty. But just as brilliant. And yet; have you heard of him? Well a visit to Pecs is recommended for art enthusiasts.
