Music in Budapest

by paddingtonbears

We will be visiting Bupadest during the last two weeks of September and we are interested in hearing live classical music. I have already booked tickets for the opera and I have found a few useful websites, especially, the Jegymester site, and the site of the Palace of Arts. My main interests are chamber music, solo recitals (violin, cello, and keyboard instruments especially), and early music (and opera of course). I understand that the Franz Liszt Academy of Music is a key venue for music, but their website simply says that it is the summer break, and doesn't indicate when that break ends. Likewise the website of the Bartok house doesn't advertise anything beyond June. I have emailed both institutions (in English) and have heard nothing back. There are also some concerts at a venue just called 'V. Petőfi Sándor u. 5.' and I have no idea where this is! Does one also have to book very early? I tried booking for a piano recital that was sold out more than two months before the performance! Any tips on where to hear this sort of music would be gratefully received. Thank you.

And dopnt miss the Budapest Klezmer Band while you are in town. They dont show anything on their calendar for the dates you are going to be there, but I would write them and check to make sure. The Spinoza restaurannt usually has a Klezmer Band on Friday evenings which is another good idea. the Operett has musicals which are generally top notch productions and generally have english translation sub-titles.

But you have come to the right place, Budapest is about the music. Enjoy.

Travel Tips for Budapest

Beautiful bridges

by dbrener

If I had to show just one thing to somebody in Budapest, I would just take them on the river and show them the bridges. Huge bridges spanning over Danube, each one with its own history and beauty, are definately a trademark of this city. Definately walking around Chain bridge and it's beautiful monumentar architecture. Standing at its middle, looking at Buda on one side and Pest on the other, it's definately the best experience in the city.

Although maybe not as much as Prague, Budapest is also a very photogenic city. Hills on the Buda side offer some nice views of the Danube and the Pest side. As with every city situated on the river, Danube is the main feature of almost all city’s panoramas. For the best views of Budapest don’t miss:

- The view of Pest side from the Funicular (Sikló)
- The views of the Parliament building and the Pest side from the Fishermen’s bastions
- The view of Castle Hill and the Pest side from the Citadel on Gellert Hill
- The view of Danube and both parts of the city from the Margit híd (Margaret Bridge)
- The view from one of the boats that sail along the Danube
- The view of the Castle Hill from tram #2 that runs on the Danube embankments
- The view of the Buda side from the Castle Hill Promenade

The great internals of the Újlaki church-the nave

by 1courage

Today, on the 17th of april 2008 I finally could get inside the Újlaki church. I was literally amazed!
This internal is fantastic! Furthermore I think that this church is in the best shape of all the baroque ones in Budapest: it was completely refurbished recently.
The internals are very luminous so by day you can see clearly every single details and take photos without flash even when the lights are swiched off. Some of the other churches (like the church of the University) haven`t got this advantage.

Last name first

by biggeorge

When Hungarians tell you their name it goes last name first then the christian name. So i'd be Masters George. However if they realize that you're foreign and not used to it they will switch it round making it very confusing.
Also a lot of Hungarians have names like Zoltan or Attila that can make them sound like Bond villians.

Moskva Ter

by biggeorge

Moscow Square in Buda is unique as it looks like the place it was named after albeit in 1975. This place is depressing and there's nowhere decent to get a drink , its probably Buda's equivalent of King's Cross as the cities only shelter for feeding and clothing the homeless is here.
