The expats usually stay in Buda area where there are many condos such as Rozja Kert, they even call that part of the city as expat valley. If you want to isolate yourself, that could be a good choice. But I stayed in Pest side, the old city center and I really enjoyed it. By walking I could reach many restaurants, bars, cinemas, Danube river and so on. If you want to socialise with locals and enjoy Budapest, choose a place around Andrassy ut, Erzsebet Körüt or close to Vaci utca, near the Parliament there are also very nice flats. I stayed in Akacfa utca which is close to Blaha Lujza Ter and Liszt Ferenc Ter as well as Erzsebet Körüt, I had the best time of my life :) For more info about cuisine, things to do, nightlife, check my Budapest page.

I would recommend you look for an apartment in District V: near the Parliament Building, Falk Miksa u.(Antiques Row), Nadar Street etc. If you are staying for a year, use the Express small adds to find your apartment as you will not pay a premium for being 'kulfuldi' as many of the english advertisements assume you will pay more than a local; here is a link, I filled in the blanks for you. You will see the size of the apartment in sq meters, the price asking per month and Kerulet is the District by Roman numerals. You are welcome to ask me, after you have short listed a few, to help you further.

Travel Tips for Budapest

budapest life

by pitane

the first thing i advice u about this city is to see the city from the danua side at night time.look at the chain birdge and it is soo magical beauty!then have a walk around river.
although th city is good at daytime u will never feel the same as u felt when u saw it at night!
the castle area and fisherman's place is also places should be visited! i was so afraid when i had a night walk trip around city suburs to find my hostel!the places far from city center is full of drug users and dont seem so safe!if u like having such wlaks do it with a group of friends!

The Danube

by call_me_rhia

The Danube is the true heart and soul of Budapest... it divides the city in two but - at the same time - manages to link it together thanks to great bridges. The river also fors an island in the city, which is where local people can go to enjoy the outdoor (without travelling for hours) I loved the bridges - all four of them: the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd), Elisabeth Bridge (Erzsébet híd), the Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) and Margaret Bridge (Margit híd). Although the chain bridge is the most famous and photographed inthe city... I must admit that I fell for the Elisabeth bridge

Inside the church of Óbuda

by 1courage

Here is another splendid baroque church internal.
Also this church has only one big nave with lovely side altars on both sides.
The only difference is that there is no painting on the main altar. Originally there was one but in 1884 this painting (wich represented Saint Peter and Paul) was replaced with the Jesus sculpture and the statues of the two saints, Saint Peter with the keys Paul with the sword.
The rest of the altair was created in 1774.

LANGUAGE: Hungarian has less...

by princesss

LANGUAGE: Hungarian has less in common with e.g. English then languages like Greek, Russian and even Hindi. So be prepared! Many especially young people speak English or German; and you can always use your hands and feet.
DRINKS: try Unicum, Palinka, Tokaj, and bulls blood: all typicall Hungarian alcoholic drinks.
PEOPLE: you should try to understand and respect they've had a very different past then most Western countries.

Railway Museum

by roadnottaken

This is a museum of Hungarian railways (of sorts). There are some locomotives out front and an older one in a little park close by. Unfortunately, the once-proud gentlemen in the foregound now have to humbly put up with pigeon poop.
