The area around this hotel was being 'done up'when I visited, with roads and pavements ripped up and workmen (and their tools) everywhere. So I got an excellent rate. I don't think I'd normally stay in such a good place.
Excellent location in the Belvaros district. It's a quiet area anyway, and will be even quieter when the one-way road system (part of the works mentioned above) is in place. Easy access from Ferihegy airport, easy walk to many of the major sights. Metro (Kalvin Ter) about 3 minutes walk away.
The hotel is recently and beautifully restored, and extremely clean. Rooms have good showers, safe, flat-screen TV (mostly Hungarian and German stations), safe, mini-bar, comfortable beds. Free internet access in reception at all times, pleasant and professional staff with good English. Free sauna and fitness room available.
Rooms had very good air-con (I imagine the heating is equally good), and the double-glazing substantially cut down any street noise. I slept very well indeed (but always use ear-plugs in hotels anyway).
As with much of Budapest the only views are of the street and the buildings opposite. Most Budapest streets are narrow and the buildings very tall, so you will pay a hefty premium for any hotel with 'a view'.
Breakfast (in the hotel cafe, a galleried area on the first floor) was good: rolls, preserves, cold meats/cheeses, pastries, fruit, hot food (bacon, scrambled eggs etc), boiled eggs, toast, cereal. Coffee from Douwe Egberts machine (perfectly acceptable), variety of teas. Only downside was the juice, which is what we call 'squash' in the UK i.e. made with water rather than with fresh juice.
The hotel has a cafe, bar and restaurant but all were closed when I visited because of the streetworks.
A good place to stay, well-located and with good facilities. For the price I paid, truly excellent value!
Directions: Nearest Metro station Kalvin Ter on Metro line 3.
Kiryali Pal Utca runs off Vamhaz Korut, the main road over Szabadsag Hid (bridge).
The Best Western in Budapest, Hungary is on a street with extensive repairs being done to the street. As a result of these repairs, water service is turned off on an ongoing and scheduled basis. Although the Best Western hotel is aware of these planned water outages they book rooms without ANY prior warning to the guests.
Both when booking the room online and when checking into the hotel I was not notified that there was a planned water outage for the following day. On May 23rd (a Saturday) I woke to find there was no water service. I was unable to shower, brush my teeth, wash my hands, use the restroom, etc. When I called the front desk they stated that I should have received a "notice" in my room alerting me to this planned outage. The water did not come on until 3pm that afternoon - my only full day in Budapest.
Not only had I not received a notice, it is not appropriate to inform a guest after they have checked into the hotel about a planned water outage. It's reasonable to expect water service in a hotel and their choosing to not tell guests is fraud and misrepresentation.
As unacceptable as this hotel's decision was, Best Western corporate has not helped matters. They have only offered a 25% refund for a weekend that was ruined by Best Western's deceptive trade practices.
Best Western's behavior is unacceptable and it's important that people are aware that not only should they avoid the Best Western - Hotel Art in Budapest, but should also think twice if they believe that using an "American" hotel chain will help protect them in case of problems overseas.
