It appears that there are no direct connections. The following site gives information about trains and buses:

There is an English-language page.

Well, I did this trip the other way round, my route was BB-Zvolen by bus, then to Surany by train and then with another train to Nove Zamky. From there I took a direct train to Budapest.

Of course, the actual route depends on when you're leaving Budapest. I recommend cp.atlas.sk too, it's a great search engine!

For optimum choice, here are some tips where to cross the border on foot:
- Komarom (train)/ Komarno (train or bus)
- Esztergom (bus, train station is quite far away)/ Sturovo (bus, train station far away)
- Hont (Parassapuszta - bus) / Sahy (bus or train)
- Balassagyarmat (bus or train)/ Slovenske Darmoty (bus)
- Somoskoujfalu (bus, local bus or train)/ Siatorska Bukovinka (bus or train)

Here are the Hungarian domestic schedule websites:
www.menetrendek.hu for buses
www.elvira.hu for trains
www.nogradvolan.hu for Salgotarjan - Somoskoujfalu local buses

And to answer your question too: no, there is no direct bus nor train between Budapest and Banska Bystrica. I've checked it in the list of official international bus services, it's not in it.

Travel Tips for Budapest

St. Stephen's Cathedral

by american_tourister

Like almost every other great capital, this one has a big cathedral. They start to all look the same but this one has a nice square and is truly centrally located.

It has a remarkable view point from the roof top and from the cupola. Take time to climb the stairs and see the view. It is worth it. You can see Budapest 360 degrees from up here.

Inside the fabulous Roses square church I

by 1courage

The view of the 4 naves (3 naves+ the cross nave) is really nice! According to the official site of the church, the reconstruction of the internals is at 70%. The difference between the colours of the ceiling of the already refurbished sanctuary and the ceiling of the main nave is very clear and very astonishing too. Just to think about, that 10 years ago the wole church was in this shape, well it`s not pleasant at all. The restaurators currently are working on the walls of the side naves. Unfortunately the church has almost finished it`s money available for the expensive works, so every donation is wellcome!
I used 2 different settings. The real colour of the church internals is somewhere between these 2 settings:)

Hungary has a varied and wonderful selection of pastries to please any sweet tooth. Just take a walk around any neighborhood and you will definitely find a shop selling all these wonderful treats.

Here is a list of some of the wonderful treats you will find at any of these shops which can be enjoyed any time of the day.

Dobos torta (Dobos cake) - sponge layered with rich chocolate cream and coated with crunchy caramel

Eszeteházy torta - cake layered with walnut cream

Krémes - light vanilla craem filled between two layers of crunchy puff pastries

Rigó Jancsi - chocolate sponge filled with light chocolate mousse and coated with chocolate

Rákóczi Túrós - cottage cheese cake

Strudels (Rétes), a flaky pastry with various fillings like cottage cheese, apple, poppy-seed and cherries

Kürtõs kalács is a hollow, cylinder shaped pastry coated with castor sugar, cinnamon or walnut, this particular treat is sold at festivals and outdoor events.

Margaret island - swimming

by ophiro

On Margaret island there are a few options if you want to swim :

1. Relax near the water of the Danube - suntan and swim in the Danube - although the island is very rocky.
2. Swim in one of the swimming pools on the island

A small warning - If you want to swim in the Danube be careful from rocks , boats and the flow that can be very strong.
Bathing suit , sun cream , hat , tower.

Gellert Hill, an excellent view point.

by dabidc

The paths on the hill twist and turn and initially climb to the top, then as you turn north you descend from the high point and go towards Buda Castle.

The paths are close to the river but well above the river and permit views to the East.
