Debrecen's GRANDEST!
We had a 'set' room, as we were on a timeshare exchange, so could not upgrade. Our room was small and just had a mini-kitchen. The bathroom was probably the nicest part of the room; quite large and with full, deep tub. Also, due to being a timeshare exchange for us, I do not know the tariffs.
Unfortunately, when we were there, early June 2007, it was unusually warm and our room did not have an air-conditioner. I saw that some of the other rooms did have them, though. We requested a fan, to get some movement of the hot still air, and the Reception Desk gave us THEIR fan!! Much of this area, as a lot of Europe, is not used to such high temperatures, and therefore, are not equipped to handle it. But the people at Reception were always courteous and helpful.
They have a large in-door pool and saunas available.
Perfectly located, in the town square!
Unique Quality: The hotel is VERY beautiful, from a by-gone era; huge staircases and ceilings high, high above; one can imagine the aristocracy in the past.
The breakfast was served in a huge dining room, and was quite extensive, with lots of selections including freshly cooked items.

Aranybika - Avoid it!
On its behalf, Grand Hotel Aranybika has its central location in Piac u., near Debrecen's main square, and the beauty of this historical Art Nouveau building, which turns this into a convenient and exquisite place to stay. Mostly interesting are the façade, the lobby and the dinning-room.
However, if you come by car, the hotel charges for its private parking - 9,00€/day - and, I remind you, we're talking about a 4-star hotel! The hotel is noisy, partly due to its location - on the corner there is a street that gets busy at night due to its bars full of youngsters. On the other hand, the hotel allows the accommodation of guests that keep walking in and out the rooms, corridors and stairs all night long. Strangely enough, one night, getting from dinner there were some women hanging around in the lobby and loud music coming from the hotel club... we could witness both the corridor lights and doors were shut and the lifts didn't work thus creating a private area for those same guests(!?).
The staff/management don't ensure a peaceful stay and, moreover, don't keep the rooms as they were supposed to in a 4-star hotel charging 104,00€ for a single room... At least, they should do the beds! Finally, those who still want to have breakfast have to arrive long before ten o'clock - at 9:30 there was not much to eat and, at 10 o'clock sharp, what still remained was immediately removed to the kitchen.
Even though tourism isn't the main business in town, the hotel should be up to its price. Avoid it!

The classic place to stay in Debrecen
Unique Quality: The Aranybika (Golden Bull) is a historic establishment. The Art Nouveau style building was designed by Alfred Hajos, an Olympic champion swimmer and architect, in the beginning of the 20th century. The hotel is centrally located next to the Nagytemplom (Reformed Cathedral). It offers superior (i.e. recently renovated) and classic rooms. It's more elegant than Hotel Nagyerdo, but it might be noisier, due to its downtown location.

The golden bull
This is one of Hungary's most famous hotels. The hotel is about 100 years old and has beautiful details both in rooms and lobby. The rooms are clean, however worn. It hasn't been done much refurbishing since the golden days, but that what makes the rooms interesting as well. An Hungarian swimmer and olympic winner is the architect of the hotel, so there is of course a swimming pool.
Unique Quality: Pool, exception lobby and dining room, great location.
