Hi! Does anyone know a nice hairdresser in or around Sopron or Köszeg? It doesn't have to be very hip but I don't want to look like my grandmother after the visit ;)
Köszenem/Thanks
a.s.
Ah, you must be an Austrian ? ;-) Sorry I cannot help with the hairdresser but I've noticed that most of the hairdresser or dentists customers in Sopron or Köszeg are Austrians ... so finding a German-speaking shop there should not be a problem.

Sopron makes for a great little excursion if you are staying in Vienna. It's just over an hour away by train and the pace of life is very different from it's larger Austrian neighbour. Of course Sopron (pronounced Shop-ron) has many historic links with Austria from the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire and much of the architecture is very similar to what you find across the old empire.
The centre of the old town is focused on a fine cobbled square with a couple of cafes, a monument, church and the famous fire tower. Originally dating from the 13th century the one that stands there today is largely 17th century following a devastating fire in 1676. I guess that's what you'd call ironic.
The monument to the Holy Trinity stands in the square that used to be the forum when Sopron was a Roman town. Scarbantia was the Roman name for the town but all that remains are parts of the towns defensive walls that were extended in later centuries.
I always seem to notice little details wherever I go that many people overlook. I couldn't help but be impressed by the manhole covers that are used in the town. They have the Sopron coat of arms embossed on them. That's what I call civic pride.
I was told that after WWII, the townspeople of Sopron had a vote to decide if the town should be in Austria or Hungary. (They were drawing new borders). The people voted to be in Hungary. It may be true or not but it is a nice story. Sopron is worth a visit. I enjoyed it very much.
Just a simple arch, what a scene for a picture. My pictures are in a square format so you must click them to see the whole thing. This archway leads into the main courtyard of Sopron and we enjoyed the music.
I like statues, and Szechenyi looks like he is out for a nice stroll in Sopron.

Q: Austria Vs. Hungary "Will Sopron give a tourist a good taste of Hungarian culture? Or is it too close to Vienna? Is there another Western Hungarian..."
