Hotel Villa Völgy: Superb base for exploring the region
For the 3 nights of my birdwatching trip based in Eger I was accommodated at this 3*/ 4* hotel which is a little out of town but conveniently located near to the wine cellars which have made the town something of a tourist attraction.
Set in very pleasant grounds, the hotel is small and friendly with most accommodation in two blocks, one of which is listed as 3*, the other as 4*. I never found out what the extra * meant in terms of facilities but I certainly didn't feel in need of anything else. My 3* room was large and very clean. TV was available. There was only a shower in the bathroom but that wasn't a problem.
There are extensive swimming pools as part of the outdoor wellness therapy centre. I only tried the indoor pool - which I must say was quite small but adequate for a short swim. There was also a sauna and steam room. Massage was available for extra cost.
Breakfast was an extensive buffet and evening meals in the restaurant were fine. There was an option to indulge in the hot buffet which was OK but possibly not worth the additional cost.
All in all I think the hotel represented excellent value for money and contributed well to my short stay in the town. I would certainly like to return.
Look for Syrian woodpeckers in the gardens further up the lane from the hotel.

Bacchus Panzio: friendly nice place, little far from center
We were in Eger after 21 hours, and were a little worried, because we hadn´t booked a room.We drove straight here(or not straight..one street had different name, than in map I printed from net).Luckily we got a room, but the kitchen was closed.Friendly staff told us to walk near for the restaurant down the hill.It seemed closed too,but when they saw us,they asked us to sit,and we got lovely dinner under threes in the garden, stars shining above that.It was romantic.
They had very safe parking-place,and a lovely pool-area,where you could eat your breakfast.Sadly it was too cold to swim.Very nice litte hotel.room costed 48euros.

Panorama Panzio': Room with a view
This nice pension is a bit far away from the city centre but it's nice, comfortable, cheap and with a great view!
There are only 5 rooms with double bed and two rooms with 3 beds and they all have antique furnitures.
From some of them and from the bulding's windows you can enjoy a great vies over the city of Eger and the hills around with the vineyards. You can see the cathedral and the minaret.
There's also a sauna and parking place.
Comfortable and quiet, with nice view.

Zold Sziget Vendeghaz
Our accommodation in Eger was a little far from the town centre than we would have liked. However, the house and the room were both very nice and good value at 30 Euros. The guy who answered the door spoke no English and only a little German but we managed to check in without any hassle. He was a lot more friendly than his wife, who we met later that evening. Eger can be an expensive place to find accommodation so we were lucky to get a nice place at such a good price.

Can't remember, stayed at someone's house who found me at the train station. Very good value, less than EUR10 a night.

We stayed with local people all during our trip, some were very nice, some not so nice, but all were interesting, and we had a good time.
Hungary has a well organized system called IBUSZ, that can find rooms in all budgets, from a room in someone's home to a fancy hotel.
We also asked taxi drivers, and they always knew of "privat" rooms.
Staying with local people gives you more a flavor of what life is like for the average person, and I highly recommend it, even if it is not as comfortable as you are used to, and most of our hosts spoke only Hungarian.

Many hotels, guest-houses and B&B. As far as I know prices are very similar to these you can have directly in hotels.
