Comfortable hotel, centrally located within walking distance of restaurants etc. Staff polite and helpful and most had good English. Room was basic but clean and had A/C and free internet access included in the price. Breakfast was a bit disappointing with not much choice on the cold table but a cooked breakfast could be ordered at no extra cost.

Re: Indian food store

by fischert

Hi Nisha

I cook a lot indian food at home.
Many of the ingredients can be bought in a bigger super market (like Tesco).
I mean: cumin, coriander seed, ginger, grated coconut, cinnamon, basmati rice, lime, chili, garlic, onion, turmeric.
Some of the ingredients should be bought at special shops. There is only few of them even in Budapest.
I usually buy there: cardamom seeds, white poopy seeds(khauskhaus), fresh coriander leaves.
Just for few basic things. I don't know Miskolc such good so others will help you.
I'm sure there are some good buthcer to buy beef and chicken and pig (others like lamb is not easy to buy even in Budapest).
What other ingredients you are looking for?

Budapestian, Tamás

Well, I've searched the web for Indian and Asian stores in Miskolc, and did not succeed. But Tamas is right, there will be enough ingredients at general stores, though of course they won't taste like at home... Maybe you can find out more from other Indian expats, I'm quite sure there are some Indians living in Miskolc, eg. university students.

You'll come across Chinese fast food restaurants for sure, but their food is customised to Hungarian taste, but you may find some food there which makes you feel at least a bit at home :)

You'll surely find restaurants offering pure vegetarian food and you'll also find ingredients to cook for yourself. I've found a shop at vegetarianus.hu offering bioproducts, including vegetarian ingredients:

There's a very good Indian food store in Budapest on the corner of Wesselényi a Akacfa streets (7th district).

If you contact them, they might be able to tell you where to buy Indian products in Miskolc.

Eger

by Ben-UK

About an hour or so by bus from Miskolc is the interesting spa town of Eger.

With a castle, Basilica, museums, a minaret and the nearby Valley of the Beautiful Women wine cellars, there's plenty to do.

Buses go from the main bus sation in Miskolc at Buza ter -- buses run approximately every hour and a half -- no need to get a ticket, pay the driver.

Lillafüred, lies about 12 km...

by arkadia

Lillafüred, lies about 12 km west of Miskolc. It has been a resort since the early part of the century a nice place to walk and get out in the nature if you are tired of Miskolc. It is on 320 m above the sea level and there you can find 3 caves. We went to the cave called Szent István about 500 m up the mountain road leading to Eger. It is not a very big cave, but a nice break. They have one hour guided tours. This cave has stalagmites, stalactites, sinkholes and large chambers.

The acient iron furnance

by Juditta

The only metallurgical monument of the whole country, the ancient iron furnace in Ómassa was preserved between the west part of the Hámori Lake and Újmassa in the picturesque valley of Garadna. Fazola Henrik, who moved from Würtzburg to Eger, built an iron furnace in Ómassa to process iron found in the northern part of the Bükk because the water power of the Garadna brook could be put to the best possible use there. He used the limestone found in the area as slag forming material and the trees of the woods to heat the furnaces, which worked with charcoal. The melting furnace was built by the son of the founder of the smithy Fazola Frigyes in 1813. The raw iron was made here for half a century. It was transported for further processing to Hámor. The decaying furnace was converted into a museum with help of the town in 1952. The model of the old furnace and foundry can be seen together with the early writings and seals of the old founders as well as the artistic block-work which made the founder Fazola family famous all over the world.
