City of Mediterranean feelings
by pecsihornet
Pécs is the largest city of Transdanubia in Western Hungary. The city is located on the southern slopes of the Mecsek Hills forty km from the rivers Danube and Drava. Although it is at a distance of five hundred kilometres from the Adriatic sea, maybe it is the nearby sea that gives the city and its immediate region a Mediterranean character.

The Holy Trinity Statue was erected in 1713, and from that time on, the main square was called Trinity Square for several decades. The second version of the statue was completed in 1750 and the present, designed by G. Kiss, was consecrated in 1908.
Thousands of locks on a small gate
by janika
Thousands of locks on a small gate / fence. A legend goes that if you put a lock on this fence, you will have eternal love. Couples place locks, sometimes with their name inscribed in them. People also put them here when they graduate from college or high school. Actually if you keep walking down on the same street, you will see a second fence, also filled with locks. The first one is quiet full already. If you want your darling to be with you till eternity, install a lock here together and trow away the key.

There are many trails one can take up in the Meksek Hills and surrounding areas. I love just getting on a bus to one of the nearby villages like Cserkut or Siklos. The picture was taken in 'Eger Volgy', on the outskirts of Pecs, 2 years ago at the beginning of October on an Indian Summers day which was about 26 degrees warm.

In my view the best wines in Hungary are the red wines from Villany, again south from Pecs. If you visit at the right time you can walk from wine cellar to wine cellar and sample [and buy!] the wine. The picture at the left is one of the cellars -- there is, literally a CELLAR underneath the little building!
