Vecses famous for sauerkraut...
"Cabbage town..."
This town is just outside of Budapest Environs
and slap bang almost next to the Budapest Airport
Ferihegy 2.
Most Hungarians think of sauerkraut or cabbage when they here
the name Veces, as there were huge fields growing mostly
cabbages in bygone communist days.
The town has a population of about 19,000 inhabitants.
In the 15th Century the region had a dense
network of villages, the documents mentioned
it as a church place. In 1786 Prince Grassalkovich
settled down 50 mainly Swabian families in Vecsés
and to a lesser extent some ethnic Slovaks and
Hungarians from neighbouring
villages.
It was given the rank of town on 1 July 2001
by the President of Hungary.
Driving through the town in August we took a wrong
turn and noticed a lot of new large houses being
built probably by people with money who had
moved out of Budapest.
