Brush up on your German...
by RockTadgers
Let's face it, Hungarian isn't the easiest language in the world to get to grips with. And English is less widely spoken in Keszthely than in Budapest.
However, since half the population of Germany seem to visit for the curative powers of nearby Heviz thermal lake, most people in the town speak German as a second language.
So I'd recommend printing off a bunch of useful German phrases, or taking a German phrasebook, because German is a hell of a lot easier to have a crack at than Hungarian. This should make life much easier, as English is very much an afterthought here.
Festetics Castle
by croisbeauty
The balcony, by the front entrance, which was supported by four pillars, was decorated with a baroque style wrought-iron railing; above it the Festetics coat of arms was mounted onto a fracted-arched framework on the main wall. The first floor windows were similarly decorated with fracted cornices except for the concert hall windows and door where the original semi-circular arches were retained.
Kesthely... Magyar

On the West Bank of Lake Balaton, Keszthely is a tourist town but also maintains a life of itself it's university and army barracks.
Nonetheless, it's still pretty dead in the winter (even the non-stop bar stopped). But if you like it peaceful then come here then.
Cannot really speak for how it is in the summer but get the impression it's a muchly visited resort.
The lake is vast and beautiful and nice to walk along at any time of year and Keszthely is only a short bus ride from the Thermal Spa at Heviz.
