There is a covered outcrop between the two falls that enables you to get close to the top part. Don't hesitate to do so but be carefull, the pathway is very slippery and you really don't want to end up in the water.

"Selfoss Layover"

We had hoped only to hitch a ride to Selfoss, but as our benefactor Finnur and we drove into Selfoss, we saw the bus to Reykjavik driving away. He said we were welcome to drive to Reykjavik with him if we didn't mind waiting 2 hours or so while he did some business in Selfoss. After lunch at the local KFC (seriously!), we wandered around town, surfed the Internet for a bit at the library, and enjoyed the pleasant weather.

"Beautiful little town on the river"

Selfoss is in the south western region of Iceland, 30 miles east-southeast of Reykjavík. You will cross the bridge that goes over the Olfusa River when you enter Selfoss. I passed through Selfoss on my way to Vik i Myrdal, just stopped and had lunch at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The power of water

A couple of hours away from Reykjavik is Selfoss, with its amazing waterfall. It is neither the widest nor the tallest in the world but it is still an impressive sight in this land of natural wonders.

"2 falls in one"

This waterfall is in fact a double one. The water first reaches a short first fall, follows the plateau on the side, goes through a second taller waterfall before being directed sideways into a gorge.

"Litres and litres of water"

By walking between the two falls, it is possible to get quite close to the action to fully realise the power of this natural phenomenon.
