I stayed in Hofn Youth Hostel for 2 nights ! Very comfortable place ! Very clean... In here, I met many travellers from all around the world & we exchanged infos & news about Iceland. As usual (all the Youth Hostels in Iceland), when arrive...if there's nobody there, just call the number which definitely be visible to you & the girl would come & see you right away. Caution : We are NOT allowed to wear shoes & boots inside The Youth Hostel (as ALL Youth Hostels around Iceland). So, bring a pair of sandals or walking bare-feet inside the hostel, which is just excellent for me !
Please tell the bus driver (if you arrive here by bus...) that you would be going to The Youth Hostel because the bus would drive a bit further & drop you just infront of the hostel ! This would save you from carrying your luggage all the way to the hostel. If by walking, would take you around 15 to 20 minutes... Nevertheless, the bus WON'T pick you at the hostel, so you need to walk to the station... The photo is showing the small garden just next to the hostel. Arnanes Guesthouse has rooms scattered on a few differents places. There's a main cluster of buildings with small cottages, where the reception and restaurant are and other houses elsewhere in the village. The owner checked us in to a couple rooms in a cottage about 1Km from the main house. It looks like it once was a family home, turned into a little guesthouse. There's a living room with kitchenette. You can use the kettle, cups etc, but not the oven. There's a buffet dinner for a fixed amount (a bit overpriced). The food was good, though a bit repetitive in some of the ingredients (cod, lamb, lamb, cod). Good breakfast, which is included in the price of the room. The rooms we were given we ok, with private and nicely appointed bathrooms. Our quad had too much light, though. It had no door between the actual bedroom and the corridor to our private bathroom and there was this window right beside the "door", from where we could be seen from the deck or window of the living room, besides the amount of light at all times (summer...). No to mention a long window on the top of the wall above the main bed. That one we could't cover at all.

Staying in a farm in Iceland -- never thought I'd do that! This is a family-run guesthouse on a farm about 30km east of Höfn. The "lobby" of the place is actually her living room, so you definitely feel like you're being welcomed into the woman's home, especially since we were the only guests there that night (and it made me feel a bit more conscious about leaving the room clean and neat, hehe). She was very nice and showed us to our room. It's actually quite a big venture. There are many rooms in two different complexes -- two floors too. At least the building we were in was brand new: it was definitely not more than a year old. It was pretty simple but it was all brand new and clean. The only minor complaint I had was that it didn't seem like it was quite finished (which is true I suppose -- they were building a connection between the two complexes). They could probably spruce up the rooms a bit more, particularly the shower, but considering it's all on a farm, I suppose it's all pretty good. The complimentary breakfast was offered in her living room and was quite nice. The highlight for me (and probably my boyfriend as well) was going out behind the rooms at the fence and having all the gorgeous Icelandic horses coming out to greet us! There were quite a few of them and they were very friendly. (At the farm we also saw two dogs and a cat.) It was really great! Leave a Comment

This hotel is located on an isolated plot surrounded on all sides by sheep fields. Although they say they are attached to the fishing town of Hofn, they are really about five miles down the main highway in the middle of nowhere. If you think you are going to walk to town, forget it. The highway has a storm gully on both sides and a very small shoulder. I took taxis to town which run over $10 each way. Otherwise, this a fine place if have a car, and a jumping point for tours up to the Vatnajokull glacier. I enjoyed the isolation of the place...but I've read some tourists who found it creepy. The panorama of mountains, glaciers and farmer's fields was a memorable experience. Like many places in Iceland, you pay a lot for a run of the mill acomodations. My room did not have a T.V. (TV in Iceland stinks anyways) and the beds were very small and not terribly comfortable. However, the staff was very kind and allowed me liberal use of the only computer with Internet, which was located behind the bar! Since getting to town was difficult for me I took most of my meals at the restaurant attached to the hotel. The food was quite good, although pricey. A three course dinner with no drinks cost me over $70! But I had lamb medallions that tasted like no other lamb I have ever eaten. In the late afternoon they have this "Viking" hour when thy serve shnapps and an old Icelandic speciality, putrified shark. Yes the shark has been putrified, or allowed to sit around rot for a few months. Somehow, it loses its toxicity. And it tastes like it sounds, horrible (like a decay itself). Icelanders only eat this after heavy inbibing and most Icelanders I know consider this stuff to be dreck. I washed mine down with Coca Cola, since I don't drink, and earned the admiration of the hotel staff.
