During our trip to Iceland, we ventured South East for a couple of days, and spent one night at the Frost and Fire Guesthouse. The Guesthouse is located in a tiny town of Hof, just off the main road, about 15 - 20kms from the turn of to Skaftafell, on the road to Hofn. To be honest, the Guesthouse looked pretty dodgy from the outside...we did have a mild panic when we arrived. Although it was located in a very picturesque location at the base of a glacier capped mountain, the outside of the building was very run down...
Luckily, the inside was a different story! It was very clean and modern. Our room was quite small but nice, with views of the mountains and valley, and had a bathroom. The other rooms had shared bathrooms in the hall. We were there just before the start of high season and initially we were the only guests staying that night, but later 3 more people arrived. We chose to have dinner at the guesthouse - it was at least a 30 minute drive to the closest other options. There was a set menu of Mushroom Soup and then delicious locally caught trout with veggies. All quite tasty. Alex had some chocolate cake for desert. We enjoyed a mini bottle each of Australian wine - amazing where you can get Aussie wine these days!! Breakfast the next morning was a small buffet - set up just for the 2 of us!! There was cereals and freshly baked bread, along with meats and cheese and the most delicious locally smoked salmon. Plenty of coffee as well helped to round of this great start to the day. All in all it was a clean and friendly place to stay...but just remember, nothing is cheap in Iceland. This was to be our littlest cottage and to be honest the house itself was so tiny that it was only for two and even then it was cramped. What made it so special was the views and watching the whales in the fjord from the veranda. There was a tiny little corner of the house made into a sleeping area separated from the living/kitchen area by a curtain. The shower/ toilet was so small you could not swing a cat in it! The kitchen area although tiny had everything you needed to cook a meal. The sitting area could be turned into two single beds but to be honest there was no room for four people (even if two were children) and their luggage. Two adults could live there but even then you had to be inventative with storage.... but we really enjoyed our stay.
The little wooden house looked out over the fjord and snowy mountains. There was a walk marked out along the shore in front of the house and we spent the evenings watching the whale watching boats and whales in the fjords. On site there were three hot tubs for the guests - free of charge. There were also two natural warm baths along the road also free of charge. you could hire horses and there were paths to follow. It was ideal for visiting Husavik which was just minutes down the road. There you could book whale watching trips, there is a wonderful whale museum and shops and restaurants. There is a good supermarket on the main road. Our trip around Iceland took us to different places every other day or so and that meant moving "house" each time. This first address and where we spent three nights was here in a little "cottage" park near Hveragerdi. On the site are 10 little wooden chalets each with their own hot tub on the veranda. The 22 square metre house was comfortly furnished, it had one bedroom, a shower and toilet and a sitting/ kitchen area. The kitchen had an oven and all the equipment you needed to cook. In Hveragerdi there is a supermarket and there are another two in Selfoss which is about 10 minutes down the road. It was warm and cosy and the houses were not close together so you could sit on the veranda (or in the hot tub) and just enjoy the long evenings and great view in peace. All our houses were included in the trip price but I am sure they were about average for the palces we visited.
I must say having your own little hot tub is a great way to spend an evening. After a day spent exploring and walking it is the way to relax. There is something very special about sitting in the warm water while you look at the snow topped mountains in the distance. This was our second stop and again we stayed three nights. The house was larger and had two floors, so in fact it had three bedrooms and could have slept 6 adults. The kitchen was well eqipped although Koos did have problems with the tin opener! - a friendly nighbour had a better one which we borrowed. There was no personal hot tub by the house but there were hot tubs on site which you could rent for a day. Again there was a supermarket in the nearest village which was Kirkjubaejarklauster about 5 kilometres away. On the large veranda was a B-B-Q and picnic bench.
Again the park was small with 12 houses on site and there is also a camping area although while we were there there was no-one camping. It was an ideal place to stay while visiting the NP Skaftafell which was about 70 kilometres away and we spent a day there walking. The drive to the park is lovely. This house was really a studio with one large room with a sitting area, a kitchen area and a sleeping area in one large space. The shower/toilet was large and clean and good. The house was warm and cosy and well eqipped. There was a hot tub which was shared by all the six houses on the site. The site was a little way out of the village of Varmahlid where there was a hotel and good supermarket and various tourist amenities.
We loved this house which we though really suited our needs on a the trip. Finding it was a little bit of a problem, you have to collect the key from the hestasport office in Varmahlid and they give you a map to get you to the cottage, phone if you are arriving after 17.00. Near the Skagafjordur. Theme: OtherAddress: Hestasport Cottages IS- 560 VarmahlidPhone: 4538383Directions: follow the hestasport signs for the office and they direct you to the houses.

Campsite at Alftavatn by bpwillet Even though we were staying in tents, the campsites along our hiking trail were very clean and very well kept. The views were stunning and the weather was good to us. It will cost you about 600IsKr per person to camp for the night and arrangements can be made with the warden. Many campsites have facilities attached with the huts so you may want to plan accordingly where you want to stay.
The shower and toilet facilities at most campsites are paid in advance. The showers will give you about 5min of hot water for 300kr but you can pay that in the shower itself. It is best to talk with the warden on your arrival to find out where the best sites are to camp, and just to let someone know that you have made it. Guesthouse Centrum-Reykjavik by bpwillet This guesthouse was a good price and a good location for our stay in Iceland. It was fairly quite and the place was clean and had a very welcoming atmosphere to it. The other travelers staying there were very personable and helpful. Each one from someplace new but always willing to help out and describe their trip so far.
It is located in a residential area of Reykjavik so you don't have to compete too badly with noise. The staff is very helpful when they are available to arrange tours and hotel pick ups. The rooms are mostly doubles and shared, but they do have a few singles. Most share a bathroom but there are sinks in some of them. Breakfast is included in the price and is typical Scandinavian style: cold meats, cheese, raw vegetables, bread for toasting, coffee, or hot water for tea. Emstrur Huts by bpwillet These huts are mostly owned by Icelandic trekking companies like Ferdafelag Islands. They are mostly hostel type accomodations with a central room and usually an indoor shower. They are situated at campsites along longer trekking routes and bookings in summer need to be in advance. They seem adequate and convenient-not to mention dry and warm after a long hike. Be sure to talk with the warden on duty when you arrive.
These huts are a convenient way to stay in Iceland if your activities and adventures take you far away from the cities and local transport. Many tours can be booked that include overnight stays in these huts. Accomodation should be booked in advance because in the summer time they can fill up fast. The camp ground is around them and that can be used for 600IsKr per person a night. Staying in the huts can cost anywhere from 800-1500IsKr a night. Theme: CampgroundPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensivePhone: 568-2533Directions: They will be listed on Trekking maps along the route you are taking. Keep an eye out for them as some do or do not include certain facilities.Website: www.fi.is

We spent our last two nights in Reykjavik and our hotel was right in the centre. Our itinerary said "studio appartment" it was a large studio with a double bed, a kitchen area which was well equipped, an eating area and shower and toilet. Warm clean and well equipped and certainly right inthe centre of town.
The hotel is central so exploring Reykavik was easy. What was not so easy was parking our hire car. there is only a tiny little area to park by the hotel and if someone blocks you in then you could have problems. We ended up parking three streets and several blocks away from the hotel - luckily we did not have much luggage. The area closer to the hotel is paid parking and was always full while we were there. Breakfast was included in our trip but is usually not included in the price of the studio - it can be booked the day before if you want to. The brakfast area is small especially if you time brakfast just as a group is there! The other problem(?) is noise, the hotle is on the main shopping street and there are lots of restaurants and night clubs there so we were treated to a very noisy and long friday night. The noise was still going on at about 2 a.m when I finally fell asleep but then I had to get up at 4.am for our flight home. If you want to cook there is a supermarket about 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
