Center Hotel Plaza: Great location and value in Reykjavyk

by Elliot2001

Center Hotel Plaza is a nice and cozy hotel in downtown Reykjavyk. The staff is very friendly and I enjoyed the overall experience very much. The breakfast is very good and it serves a variety of foods in buffet style. Rooms are very comfortable with bathrooms of an adequate size, adding to the good value of the hotel. The long days of summer offer no problems to sleep, since there are heavy curtains that can keep the clarity away. I definitely recommend this hotel for those who want a nice and not expensive hotel, but with comfort and practicity.

The greatest quality of Center Hotel Plaza is its location. There are many restaurants and gift shops very near, on strolling distance. The square in front of the hotel has a lot of typical buildings and a great atmosphere. The departure point of many tours, the main commercial street and the Tjornin, a beautiful lake with beautiful typical houses, are also nearby.
Just go outside the main entrance, turn right and you'll find a convenience store where you can buy refreshments and snacks to take along with you in your tours, since many of them doesn't allow you much time to eat properly.

CenterHotel Klopp: Close to Everything in Downtown Reykjavik

by carastar

We stayed here for a few days at the beginning of our trip and at the end. It's beautiful and clean, the staff are very friendly, the breakfast is great and the hotel is within walking distance of everything in Reykjavik.

The room we had at the beginning of our trip was right on Klapparstigur across from a pub. Even though our first night sleeping there was a Thursday night, the place was packed and loud with live music. This was easily remedied with ear plugs. The other nights, we were out partying with everyone anyway, so the noise was no bother. Any hotel in Reykjavik 101 area will probably be loud at night, I'd imagine. At the end of our trip our room was located at the back of the hotel and it was much quieter.

The rooms are decorated simply and attractively in white and red. The beds were very comfortable and everything was very clean. We paid about $85 per night, which was a fantastic deal (through Hotels.com I think). We plan to stay here the next time we are in Reykjavik.

The breakfast at CenterHotel Klopp was one of my favorites of the trip. Although the food was just the usual fare -- bread, hard-boiled eggs, ham, vegetables, melon, coffee, juice -- it all seemed very fresh and the dining room is surrounded by windows which makes it a lovely place to start the day.

Hotel Aldan: Most Adorable Hotel In the World? Probably.

by carastar

This hotel is my favorite I've ever stayed. Beautifully decorated in all white bedding, antique furniture, lovely wood floors, panelling -- everything simple and clean and light. This is THE place to stay in the East Fjords of Iceland.

The hotel restaurant was very good. We had dinner (the last night they were open for the season) and the cod was amazing. Breakfast the next morning was equally as good (just the standard fare for a Scandinavian breakfast), and the dining room couldn't be more lovely.

Wonderfully restored buildings and decorated simply and cleanly. Very good restaurant. Gorgeous setting.

Farfuglaheimilið Hvoll.: A very good hostel in South-Iceland.

by Regina1965

I stayed at Hvoll for one night in September 2010 and got pleasently surprised. Everything was up to par, it is a 500 fm2 hostel with a big dining area and two kitchens and a lot of showers. We were 2 travelling together and got a room for ourselves and in that room were beds for 4 people and a sink. Altogether there is room 70 people at the hostel.´

For 2 people I paid ISK 6.700 with the discount of my hostel-card.

When reading reviews about the hostel people mentioned that it was in the middle of nowhere. Well, that is Iceland for you. It is run by a married couple who are also farmers with 100 sheep. They started building the hostel in 1999 so it is brand-new. The reception to the hostel is in their farmhouse. I totally recommend staying there and will definitely stay there again when travelling in South-Iceland.

As it is in the middle of nowhere so to speak then it is only ideal to arrive there in the evening. We arrived there at 16 o' clock and went further on to Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell, but in September the sun sets at 19:30 so we had very little time to see anything before dark. And it gets pitch dark by Hvoll. It is situated close to the ocean and the black beaches and rivers run through the black sand, so it gets even darker. There is a view of Öræfajökull glacier from the hostel.

The hostel is very environmentally conscious, you will see if you decide to stay there.

It is open from 1st of March - 31st of October.

The hostel is ideally located as it is only 45 km away from Skaftafell National park and from Skaftafell there are 55 km to the amazing Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.

Mountain hut: Landmannalaugar

by IoannaE

If you stay in Landmannalaugar - and you should, you should! - you have two options: camping in a cold, windy, rocky site, or sharing sleeping quarters with 80 people in the 'mountain hut'. The latter is warmer....and definitely well equipped. In the kitchen, I even saw Italians making pasta pomodoro. Carry your own provisions, though there is a small canteen in the shape of an old school bus

Basic but fun, good for meeting people, well equipped kitchen, unfortunately bathrooms and showers are in another building (that makes for a very cold walk at night). But who cares, really, when you are surrounded by multicoloured volcanic mountains and hot springs?

Hotel Edda - Laugar í Sælingsdal.: Hotel Edda - an Icelandic hotel chain.

by Regina1965

Hotel Edda is a hotel chain all around Iceland and is only open during the summer time as they serve as a school during the winter time.

The rooms are basic, but lovely. I booked a room with only a washbasin in the room. There are showers and toilets in the corridors. There is a good closet space and the rooms are spacious. The only thing that was not up to par was the heating, there was some problem with the heating in our room and the staff at the reception was very helpful and came and tried to fix the radiatior. When they couldn't get the heating on they gave us another room on the next floor - but unfortunately there was no heating there as well. I guess this was only a temporary problem and that they had it fixed.

There is a swimming pool by the hotel but you have to pay extra for entering the pool as it doesn't belong to the hotel. Rather than using the pool I recommend you try out Guðrúnarlaug hot tub with natural geothermal water. I loved it and my main reason for staying at this particular hotel was visiting this pool. This area is a pure Viking area and this pool (a replica) belonged to one of the most famous women of the Saga Laxdæla (see my tip on Guðrúnarlaug).

The hotel is situated in a lovely walley and there are so many things to do and see in this area and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Check out their summer-offer - you can get a VERY good price on certain dates. I certainly took advantage of that and paid less than I would have at a guesthouse.

Bargain Downtown Hotel

by cdr1985

This hotel is in near the harbour or Reykjavik. The rooms were basic but very clean, and the bathrooms were very nice. A large breakfast buffet is included in the price of the room.

It is possible to book excursions through the hotel reception, and there is free use of the internet also. There is a 24 hour supermarket behind the hotel and all the major tour companies will pick you up and drop you off here.

The staff were always very friendly and helpful.

Room with a view: Where to stay in Reykjavik

by chrisbilal

If you stay in the convenient middle of Reykjavik keep in mind that will be a ton of noise on weekend nights due to the excessive partying by the locals - we put up with it and choose "Room with a view" that had a kitchen.

We used to quite a bit after getting our first restraunt bill :)

The rooms were spotless and the owners friendly. They even had a collection of DVDs you could borrow from.

Short term apartments with kitchens.

Hotel Orkin - Reykjavik: Hotel Orkin - Reykjavik

by GrumpyDiver

We got in quite late (but this was scheduled), so was no surprise to the hotel. When we got there, the door was locked and we had to phone someone to let us in.

There person at the front desk must have disappeared moments after we checked in, because the beds were not made up. The buzzer at the front desk was not functioning, or was being ignored.

When confronted with this in the morning, no apologies etc. They just blamed the cleaning staff and also claimed the buzzer was working. A so-so hotel to begin with. Not a place I would recommend.
