  • Excellent Stay

We have just returned from a long weekend break in Reyjavik and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Castle apartments.
They are spotlessly clean, very warm and extremely well equipped. This a great bonus, as the cost of eating out is tremendously expensive.
The location is excellent as the apartments are in a quiet area beside the National Art Gallery and near the lake. It is about a five minute walk to the centre of town and about ten minutes to the main bus terminal.

We did a number of organised trips, which were great to see the landscape, but if the weather had been not so unpredictable we would have definitely hired a car to get around.
The Blue Lagoon is a must, especially at this time of year.

As of November 2000, prices range from 8,500 ISK in the winter for a studio apartment up to 15,000 ISK in the summer for a one-bedroom apartment for up to four people. This is about $100-$175 USD (Use the popup Personal Currency Assistant for current exchange rates). This may seem high but is very competitive with other prices in Reykjavik, an expensive city. In December 1999 we paid about $95 per night for a studio apartment.

Unique Quality: Not exactly a hotel, Castle House is more like an apartment or flat with some hotel services. This creates a feeling of being at home in the heart of the city. There is no traditional hotel infrastructure (lobby or restaurant), but your room is cleaned every day. The location is outstanding - a quiet neighborhood next to Iceland's National Gallery of Art, just a few yards away from the pond in the city center, yet only five minutes walk away from the commercial district in the heart of downtown (Laugavegur). The apartments are located in the white building just to the left of the church in the picture above (the church is also visible on the right-hand shore of the lake in the panarama at the top of this page).

Directions: Skalholtsstigur 2a, next to the National Gallery (Listasafn Islands), just a few steps away from the Tjörnin (pond) in the city center.

Exceeded Expectations! Keep it UP

My girlfriend and I booked a studio apartment(don't remember the apartment number) at Castle House(Hotel Castallin) and were upgraded to a bigger apartment without any request and ofcourse free of charge. The apartment was NEAT and my GF loved it. Every small detail was looked into and we did not feel the need for anything else.

The location was spot-on, just in front of the city centre pond with everything nearby. The BSI bus terminal was a leasurily 10 mins walk. The main shopping n clubbing street ( Lauguvigur (pardon the spelling)) was a mere 5 minute walk.

The only problen I saw with the apartment was with the bathroom. It was quite small for 1 person , leave alone 2 people taking a shower together. But thats okay. The main problen was that the water would drain out very slowly flooding the whole bathroom and while having a bath one had to stop the shower for a minute and then start again. And also between two people taking a shower, the second person had to wait for a couple of minutes for the water to get drained.

What was most amazing was that althought we did not see a single person from the hotel staff everything was superbly managed. That is something incredible which I have never experienced.(especially being from India where always more people are doing a work than actually required and still no perfection generally).

Comfort in a great location

by TripAdvisor Member IrelandDonall

We stayed at the Castle Apartments for 2 nights in early July and had a wonderful stay in this wonderful city. The location is excellent, about 5 minutes from the main street and square yet it is in a very quite area. Our apt number 20 overlooked the 'pond' which was very pleasant (and a great attraction for our son who enjoyed feeding the ducks!) On street pay parking is readily available. The room was spotlessly clean and iedal for 2 adults and 2 children with a king sized double bed in the bedroom and a good sized double sofa bed in the living area which converted easily. The bathroom was very small but had a good powerful shower, no bath. The galley style kitchen was very well equiped and the living area was very comfortable and had a TV and DVD player. By Icelandic standards the apartment represents good value for money and is ideal for families or those who would prefer a self-catering option (which is not a bad idea as eating out is expensive).

Perfect Location

We stayed at the Castle House apartments during the Cultural days festivities and the Marathon on Aug 18/07. My husband was with Team diabetes so he was staying with the group at another hotel and so my parents and I wanted some place close so we could just walk to see each other. It was a perfect place to stay because you were only a 5 minute walk from all the activities but it was still far enough away to get a good night sleep. We were very close to everything. Walking distance to all the shops and restaurants and only a short bus ride away from the big shopping mall.
Very expensive to eat in Iceland therefore having a very well equipped kitchen is a must to make the trip more affordable.
My only complaint is that the washroom is off the bedroom and because I was sleeping on the pull out couch I had to go through my parents bedroom to use the washroom.
I you are arriving from North America and flying overnite I recommend the Iceland Eye Opener excursion. You are picked up at the airport, taken to a hotel with a scandinavian breakfast buffet, then Whale watching and then driven to the Blue Lagoon. After not sleeping all night the Blue lagoon was actually rejuvenating and then you are taken directly to your accomadation in Rekyjavik. It was well worth the 129.00 cdn. Our guide Helga even made a stop at a little grocery store for us so we wouldn't have to go back out again once we got to the apartment.
I would definitly recommned Iceland and the Castle house apartments,

Excellent situation

by TripAdvisor Member Radge_Badger

We stayed here for five nights. The central location meant that the town was within easy reach and the main bus station was 7 minutes' walk away. The view over the pond was lovely, the flat well equipped, and the free wifi access very welcome. Judging by the prices in the restaurants we saved ourselves a small fortune by self catering. Several supermarkets were within walking distance - "Bonus" seemed to be the best stocked and most fairly priced. Thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Reykjavik and beyond.

Great little base in the middle of the city

by TripAdvisor Member Jeannie468

We stayed here when I brought my sons to Iceland for three days in August, having despaired at the price of hotel rooms and seached on the web for an apartment instead.
Overall very pleased - the best thing about the apartments was the location - in the centre of the city and literally next door to the National Art Gallery. We could easily walk everywhere in the city and, as an added bonus, there was a parking place for our hire car directly outside so that it was easy to drive out too.
The apartment was small but very clean and well-equipped and furniture/fitting etc were of good quality. Everything worked and service was very good - key pick up was smooth and exactly as described. The copy of the Lonely Planet in the lobby was especially welcome!
Would definately recommend this as long as you don't need a huge space to spread out in.

Excellent apartment

We spent three nights in apartment 20 in Castle Luxury Apartments and found it to be an excellent base for touring Reykjavik and near by areas. We were able to check in as soon as we arrived (8:30 a.m.). Our keys were waiting and the apartment was clean and well furnished. We had a couple of questions and the staff was friendly and prompt at answering our questions.

This apartment has a fabulous view of the pond from its windows. This apartment has a nice small balcony. It would be lovely in warmer weather. We did not have the opportunity to use it.

We were able to walk throughout the city from the apartment. We liked being able to prepare our own food. I was not impressed with Bonus. I liked Hagkaup much better. It is located in the Kringlan shopping mall. Everything we needed for food preparation was supplied in the apartment. It was an added benefit that they came in and did the dishes every day.

The shuttle driver from the airport bus took us directly to the apartment. However, it is an easy walk from the bus terminal to the apartment.

Great apartments, perfect location

by TripAdvisor Member Aisling_Kat

Followed the advice of other Trip Advisor users and stayed at the Castle House apartments while on a trip to Iceland. I have nothing but good things to say about them.

They're clean, warm, ridiculously well kitted out (egg slicer, anyone?) with everything you need to enjoy a very cosy stay in Reykjavik. Luxury might be stretching it a bit, but they have everything you need at a good (for Iceland) price. The location is brilliant - quietly tucked behind the Art Gallery, and a five minute walk to the town centre.

Just a tip - the Airport bus will chuck you out at the bus station - but its only a few minutes from the apartments - just head for the lake..

Excelent location & made Reykjavik affordable

by TripAdvisor Member Meltwaterfalls

I was a little amazed when I saw the almost perfect scores these apartments were getting, but after staying I can say they certainly deserve a strong recommendation.
The apartments were very clean and well apointed having pretty much everything we needed, except strangely a kettle, but this was easy to get around as there was a coffee perculator or saucepans. The small kitchen was very good at reducing costs as eating out in Reykjavik can be expensive so a night of cheap homecooking can help with costs.
The location is excelent right next to the Icelandic National Gallery on the bank of Tjörnin (pond). it was a short 2 or 3 minute walk to Bankastræti the main street, the apartments themselves are very much in central Reykjavik.
We had a double room, there was a single bed when we arrived but it was pretty simple to convert we just pulled out the second part under the bed and it pretty much set itself up.The images of the rooms on the website give a clear indication of what each apartment looked like.
If you have a car then there is plenty of street parking available infront of the hotel and it was not particularly expensive if I remember around €5 a day.

We booked through and we paid around 45% of the rate on the website which was an absolute steal for any accomodation in Reykjavik let alone a self catering city centre apartment.
Would certain recommend.
