Great location for your Icelandic Adventure!
Very clean and the shower heads were big, scandanavian style, over your head like rain falling. Geothermic Pool with waterslides, hot pots and jacuzzis right next to hostel.

This was a large, clean, and friendly hostel that seemed to be completely booked by Americans. It was clean and had the option of same-sex rooms, which is always a plus, but it is not fun walking 45 minutes in a blizzard to get to town each day.
Unique Quality: Right next to a large spa and swimming pool. Extremely safe!
The hostel for a private room costs the same as a basic hotel, but offers fantastic facilities if you are on a budget and cant afford to be eating and drinking out all of the time. Its 30 mins walk from town but there are buses from outside for 220 crowns.
Hostel was expertly run and the staff and residents were a friendly international crowd. There are lots of board games, somfy settees and a projector to watch bjork and icelandic films!
Unique Quality: Great self catering facilities, dvd player and projector,
Laugardalur is some way from 101 Reykjavík (the city centre), but the facilities and service are top-notch. In Iceland, pretty much everything tends to be expensive, so it is worth it to save some money by sleeping in this great youth hostel.
The friendly staff is largely made up of foreign students, who are just as fascinated as visitors by Reykjavík and Iceland.
Unique Quality: The hostel has two kitchens equipped a fridge and stove where you can prepare your food. It also sells breakfast in the morning -- however, its rather steep price of 800 IKR (as of Jan. 2007) makes it cheaper to head downtown at any of Reykjavík's cafés.
The unattractive facade of the hostel hides a camping ground in the back, where you can set up your tent if you have one, as well as a fairly large park that makes for pleasant walks. You can also find the City Zoo and Botanical Gardens in the park area.
The hostel is located in Reykjavík's sports neighbourhood, near the Laugardalur swimming pool complex, the Laugardalur Sports Stadium, where the national Iceland football team plays its matches, and the skating rink.
Wonderfully friendly staff. Clean rooms. Right next to the hostel is a pleasant botanical garden and a public thermal pool. The pool even has a waterslide and they let adults use the slide. That was great fun.
There are several youth hostels in Iceland (see website, hostel map), including the one in Reykjavik.
Unique Quality: Reasonable prices and location.
A total of 25 youth and family hostels are open, including Reykjavík, Fossholl, Hrauneyjar, Leirubakki, Njardvik, Reykholt, Stafafell and Stykkisholmur. Many country hostels provide overnight accommodation for travellers bringing their own sleeping bags or bedrolls for a fee. In uninhabited areas there are a number of huts where travellers can stay overnight. They must observe regulations posted in the huts and bring their own sleeping bags and food.

Unique Quality: Very friendly staff and atmosphere. The receptionists are always willing to help with tourist information. The hostel itself is very clean and you can meet great people like this grand-Dad travelling from Reykjavik to Bergen via the Faroe Islands!

Anyone ever stay at the hostel in Reykjavik? Decent place? how close to town or how easy is it to get to and from? its address is: Reykjavik City Hostel
Sundlaugavegur 34
105 Reykjavik
Well, I've never stayed at the hostel in Reykjavík (obviously, 'cause I live here!) but it should be decent since it's been renovated a few years ago.
It's not situated in the city center though, it's in about 20-30 minutes walking distance from the center of the city center!
It's however very convient to take bus nr. 5 just accross the street, it will take you downtown.
Yes we stayed there in November,it was great, well situated, very clean and very quiet. We booked a double room and had no problems at all. Its right next to the best thermal swimming pool and baths in Reykjavik. We did walk into the centre on two occasions this took about 20/30 minutes. There are also a few eating places close by,also a supermarket and a great bakery. We hope to visit again maybe in the summer months when I know it gets busier.
cool thanks much, just what i wanted to hear.
