130$ per room per night great atmosphire, great kitchen and stuff.
Us dollars = 350 to 400 a night for a suite. If you are on a budget, don't go here! Very expensive place, but extremely beautiful. Suites are about 350 to 400 US$ a night, but come with a hot tub (and a shower head the size of a large pizza! nice!), very large and comfortable bed, a lounge area, and extra thick curtains to make it dark enough to sleep. Easy access to the city, and the staff will help you book any tours that you want to see.
I loved this beautiful old hotel, perfectly located in the center of town. The hotel is within easy walking distance to all the sites of Reykjavik and has a friendly full-service mentality. The site could not be better, right on Parliament Square!
This hotel was wonderful!! Not cheap by any means and there are cheaper places to stay but I treated my boyfriend to a weekend break here. The room was upgraded to a suite on our arrival and we were served champagne shortly after arrival. The room was huge, wooden floors, large comfy bed and crome features everywhere, recently renovated in an art deco style in keeping with the building itself. Views at the back aren't great but you can open the curtains in the morning lay in bed and watch the sun come up - a rare sight for me. Think I could have slept in the bathroom it was so lovely and the shower head was the size as a dinner plate! Great location on a square and within easy walking distance to all the sights. Great cafe opposite - Cafe Paris Loved everything about it
We have just returned from a (surprise for my 30th!!) weekend in Reykjavik and Hotel Borg was our hotel.
This lovely Art Deco style hotel was a fantastic, yet slightly expensive base. We had a suite which was basic, but very stylish and comfortable. Another reviewer mentioned only having 6 TV channels, but there are movies available (loads!!).
The hotel is bang in the town centre and overlooks a lovely square lit by Christmas lights at this time of year. It was 5 minutes walk to the picturesque pond round whish we tended to walk our meals off! There was a lovely safe feeling in the town even though it was dark for much of the day (hence the photos being dark!!), and violent crime is very low in Reykjavik, so walking was safe. Coffee shops are all over and we found a lovely one called VOP on the main street - 2 cafe lattees and 2 portions of warm homemade apple pie and cream - just enough to keep the cold off. It is cold this time of year, especially when its windy, so take plenty of layers, gloves and scarfs!
All in all, a wonderful weekend, with trips to the Blue Lagoon (fantastic and very hot!), Geysers (very impressive!), snowmobiling (expensive but worth it - £120 for 2 people), but no Northern Lights as it was too cloudy and a full moon. I would recommend going on an organised tour this time of year having encountered enough black ice to last a lifetime and we were with an experienced driver (we encountered a rolled hire car so be warned!).
Restaurants are expensive - we went to the Indian restaurant, had 2 courses and 4 beers and it was £180 for the 2 of us! But then, 40 mins of pool, a Breezer and SoCo was £25! Visit Hotel 101 - a lovely hotel, for a coffee and to warm by the fire.
Go and enjoy Reykjavik and Hotel Borg - just take lots of money, a sense of humour and you will have a perfect base for a fantastic weekend away!!
We stayed at the Borg for 5 days. The location is great and the room was big, but that's where the fun ended. We knew that they would be renovating the hotel, but what we didn't know was that loud renovations would start before 8 am some days. The hotel staff merely shrugged when we complained about this. And even early risers are not safe from this issue, since jet lag from US timezones has early birds (like myself) waking up at 10 or 11.
Also, be very careful about hidden charges. The costs of the telephone are not listed anywhere. I made a few local calls (no more than a minute long for any of them -- one was a wrong number), and when I got the bill, each local call cost over $5!!! The staff merely shrugged and said that another company provided phone service and it wasn't their problem. It is infuriating to know that local calls, which cost the hotel less than a cent, are billed at over $5. The lesson is 1) I'm a ***, and 2) to not do anything in that hotel without asking how much it is first. You certaintly can't count on them to be fair.
On to more fun subjects: if you have the money, definitely eat at Perlan. It sounds cheesy (rotating restaurant, city view), but it is really elegant and the food was phenomenal. It's a bit of a hike, so expect a $20 cab ride each way from city center, but I thought it was worth it. If you're going to spend $100 on a meal for two at any good restaurant in Rekjavik, you might as well drop it at Perlan. Blue lagoon was nice too, but if you don't have the $$$ to spend on that, just do the public pool at laugevedur (spelling?). It was $7 (lagoon is $50), and it was really relaxing.
Iceland is definitely worth a trip. The Hotel Borg is not.
We stayed here at the end of October.
I knew before we went that the Borg had been refurbished. i thought it was completed, so it was a shock when we arrived that the reception was very dated and old fashioned. (they were fitting new light fittings when we arrived - so they are on to it!) It was a relief once we got to our floor that it was beautiful smelling fresh and new. The room we were assigned was a little small so I asked to be moved to accomodate the cot. They asked us to check out another room to see if it was big enough. They allowed us to stay in the room until the other was ready! Great service.
The room was front facing with big double windows. It was hot in the middle of the night on the friday and saturday night so we had to open the windows. the noise was loud from the party people outside, but in a bareable way... my 16 month old daughter slept through it all! Beds were a nice big size!
Caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights Saturday night which was nice, the sky was beautifully clear!
Good breakfast even though not included in price. 1300kr each!
Reykjavik is a great place and dont let anyone put you off about the prices, you can survive on any budget. I suggest lunch at the Svarta Kaffid for there wonderful soup served in big round loafs... saves on their washing up!!! Cant wait to revisit!
I was really pleased with the Borg. First, it is extremely well located in the centre of the city, close to museums, the harbour, shops and excellent restaurants.
The hotel was recently (2006) renovated and restored to its original 1930s grandeur. Our spacious and well-proportioned room had a view on the square with two large windows, tall ceilings and beautiful hardwood floors. The beds were very comfortable and the duvets and pillows down-filled (ok maybe some feathers) and mile-high. Other features included an LCD TV (albeit with few channels), complimentary internet access and a Philip Starck-designed mile-deep bathtub with a rain shower head.
I even enjoyed the wide and plush hallways with plenty of natural light, the beautiful winding staircase and the antique-filled reception area.
Staff was helpful and knowledgeable on a number of occasions.
Only little thing, the breakfast was not included in the price of the room and was nothing exceptional. But there are other hotels around and a little supermarket.
I recommend the Seafood Cellar restaurant - truly award-winning - (actually, they did win Conde Nast awards) and very close to the hotel. A more casual and cheaper choice is a restaurant that looks like a diner almost facing the 10-11 supermarket on the main shopping street. Try the specials - and they have excellent fries :-)
Hotel Borg.
