Good value guesthouse near Hallgrimskirkja

My friend and I stayed at Floki Inn for 3 nights during a visit to Reykjavik in December 2007.

We paid 76 Euros per night for a twin room with shared bathroom facilities and breakfast.

Location

Floki Inn is located on Flokagata, just a 5 minute walk from the famous Hallgrimskirkja church, and a 2 minute drive from the BSI bus terminal. It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to Reykjavik city centre – the journey there being largely downhill, and the journey back being an uphill struggle (often battling against strong winds and driving snow/hail during our visit!). The surrounding area is largely residential, with a petrol station and a few shops within a 2 minute walk of the guesthouse.

If, like many guests, you are arriving by Flybus from Keflavik airport, the bus will drop you off right outside the guesthouse. This may involve changing to a smaller bus at BSI bus terminal, but in our case we remained on the same bus while people staying elsewhere got off and boarded other buses. The reception desk booked our bus back to the airport for us the day prior to us leaving.

Bedroom

Floki Inn consists of several buildings. The reception area is located at Flokagata 1, while our room was located two buildings down at Flokagata 5. The walk between the two buildings takes only a minute or two.

All the buildings look similar – they are effectively detached houses with gardens out front and a handful of guestrooms inside.

Our room was basic – it consisted of two single beds (small, but comfortable), a bedside table, a washbasin, a TV (which we never actually turned on), coffee and tea making facilities, a mini fridge and a small wardrobe. It was incredibly well heated (essential in the depths of winter!) and had a nice view of the snow-covered back garden.

The bathroom facilities (shower, toilet, washbasin in a fairly spacious bathroom) were shared between 3 or 4 rooms. We never had any problems with them being occupied, and they were always very clean. Hot water was always available (be warned, that the shower water in Iceland often has a rather unpleasant sulphur smell), towels are provided and there were a few complimentary toiletries in the bathroom.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served between 7am and 10am in a small dining hall, which is located in a conservatory-like building adjacent to the reception area. As it doesn’t get light until 11am in Iceland in December, the thought of getting up for breakfast at such an early hour wasn’t very appealing. Therefore, we only had breakfast on the morning that we had to get up early for our 9:30am trip to the Blue Lagoon.

Rather unfortunately, there had been a power cut and the dining room was dimly lit with a few candles. It was almost impossible to see the breakfast buffet spread in that kind of light. The selection included cereals, yoghurt, crispbreads, bread (and a toaster to toast it), cheese, jam, coffee, tea and fruit juice. I settled for a couple of bowls of cornflakes, some very tasty crispbreads with cheese and a lukewarm (thanks to the power cut) wildberries flavoured tea.

General

The reception area offers a lot of information and is a great place to ask for advice, book excursions, pick up brochures and discount vouchers, buy postcards, use the Internet (at a very expensive rate – but that seemed to be the going rate in Reykjavik!) and book your return bus journey to the airport. The various staff that we met were all friendly and helpful.

On the day of our departure, we were able to store our luggage in a storage cupboard for the day between checking out at midday (the deadline for checking out) and being picked up by the Flybus late in the afternoon. There was no charge for this.

A good value guesthouse, in a residential area close to Hallgrimskirkja. Recommended!
