The campsite at Kverná, Grundarfjörður, W-Iceland: Camping by a beautiful waterfall.
by Regina1965
The campsite at Kverná in Grundarfjörður is a popular campsite, owned by 2 brothers who live on the farm Kverná, next to the campsite. The manager of the campsite is Kristinn. By the way they are my father's cousins. And my grandfather was raised in Grundarfjörður, so this place is dear to me. It was a pity that it was so foggy the day I visited, there is a lovely mountain in Grundarfjörður called Kirkjufell (I have a painting of this mountain hanging in my living room :D)The facilities at the campsite are in a summer-cottage on the campsite, but sometimes tourists rent the cottage, so when I was there there was only one shower and one toilet. But they are going to add more facilities there. The ground is even but underneath there are some rocks, so if you are bringing a tent you might have to try first putting the tent-pegs in the ground and find a spot where there are no rocks underneath. The campsite is open during the summer months 1.06-1.09 and the fee is only ISK 500.
We are planning a family-reunion at Kverná next year.
There are 2 lovely waterfalls near the campsite. You have to walk through the horse pastures to get to one waterfall (I have got a painting of that waterfall in my living room as well :D ), I got permission to go there, but I am sure Kristinn will give permission if asked. But he also takes people on a guided tour there. There is horse-rental at Kverná as well and Kristinn speaks both English and German and takes people on sight-seeing tours around this area. There are also 3 rooms for rent in their farmhouse. Take a look at their website for very interesting organised riding tours and walking trips.
