Hotel Framnes: ...by the sea

by smirnofforiginal

Located along from the harbour and with views from the windows overlooking the mountains and the sea it was a lovely place to stay.
Very comfortable and clean - the family room was large which is always nice. Oh, I should also mention is was nice and warm too with tea & coffee making facilities.

Breakfast was included in the price and was a buffet. The lady made pancake after pancake after pancake for my sons until I ahd to demand they STOP! eating!!! I didn't get alook in but they were, apparently, very nice!

1 night for a family of 4 b&b basis was €136

The campsite at Kverná, Grundarfjörður, W-Iceland: Camping by a beautiful waterfall.

by Regina1965

The campsite at Kverná in Grundarfjörður is a popular campsite, owned by 2 brothers who live on the farm Kverná, next to the campsite. The manager of the campsite is Kristinn. By the way they are my father's cousins. And my grandfather was raised in Grundarfjörður, so this place is dear to me. It was a pity that it was so foggy the day I visited, there is a lovely mountain in Grundarfjörður called Kirkjufell (I have a painting of this mountain hanging in my living room :D)The facilities at the campsite are in a summer-cottage on the campsite, but sometimes tourists rent the cottage, so when I was there there was only one shower and one toilet. But they are going to add more facilities there. The ground is even but underneath there are some rocks, so if you are bringing a tent you might have to try first putting the tent-pegs in the ground and find a spot where there are no rocks underneath. The campsite is open during the summer months 1.06-1.09 and the fee is only ISK 500.

We are planning a family-reunion at Kverná next year.

There are 2 lovely waterfalls near the campsite. You have to walk through the horse pastures to get to one waterfall (I have got a painting of that waterfall in my living room as well :D ), I got permission to go there, but I am sure Kristinn will give permission if asked. But he also takes people on a guided tour there. There is horse-rental at Kverná as well and Kristinn speaks both English and German and takes people on sight-seeing tours around this area. There are also 3 rooms for rent in their farmhouse. Take a look at their website for very interesting organised riding tours and walking trips.

Langaholt in Snæfellsnes-peninsula: Camping by a golden beach in W-Iceland

by Regina1965

The campground at Langaholt in the Snæfellsnes-peninsula is one of my favourite. There is a guesthouse by the road and golfing and the campsite is ca 100 m from the guesthouse. There are no showers on the campsite but showers inside the guesthouse which you can use for a small fee. And toilets by the campsite with a sink. The fee for camping there is only ISK 750. The campground is very popular amongst Icelanders and the kids jump in the ocean on relatively warm days here. This is a lovely place to camp while visiting the most interesting Snæfellsnes-peninsula, on which I have added a lot of tips.

There is a swimming pool only 6 km from the campsite which has got naturally carbonated geothermal water in it which is rich in minerals and considered to be healing for the skin with no chemicals added in it. It is called Lýsuhólslaug and is open during the summer time until August 10th (see my next tip).

It is located next to a beautiful golden beach with a lot of colourful pebbles/stones with a fantastic view of the magical Snæfellsjökull-glacier. On a sunny day this is the place to be. See my tip for Snæfellsjökull-glacier here Snæfellsjökull

Hótel Búðir: A special place

by snorril

I have not stayed at this hotel yet but heard nothing but good things about it. It is a very special hotel newly built after the old one burnt down.

Those of you who can afford to travel in a little style Hotel Búðir is a perfect place to stay at.

The hotel also has a luxorious dining room and makes a perfect location for a romantic dinner.

This hotel is situated at Búðir with amazinging surroundings. Iceland's largest golden sand beach and vast lava fields make together unique mixture.

The hotel is also close to various activities like hiking, riding, fishing, snowscooters etc.

Hellnar: Beautiful campground

by snorril

- update 2005 - * Unfortunately the campground at Hellnar has been closed. The surroundings of course have not changed and you can still book accommodation at the guesthoust - albeit a little more expensive than the campground was. Haven't stayed in their rooms but they sure look nice and this place is still highly recommended. The closest campground is at Arnarstapi (must see activities).

The campground at Hellnar is quiet and cosy and beautifully set. It has moderate facilities including showers.

The place also has sleepingbag accommodation and a guesthouse. It is run by a kind of a new-age family with emphasis on organic food, meditation and such.

If you are not into this new-age thing (I'm not) you shouldn't be deterred because the place is open to everyone.

The campground is set in extremely beautiful settings with interesting rock formations at the coast and amazing views of Snæfellsjökull glacier and Mt. Stapafell.

There are beautiful hiking paths in the vicinity and I can recommend walking along the coastline to Arnarstapi (3 km.)
