Bunratty Lodge is a lovely B&B hosted by the Browne family. It is tastefully furnished, comfortable and near to Bunratty Castle. Reservations are needed because it always books up! Convenient to Shannon airport for first and last days of your visit. By the way, try to get your air reservations for leaving later in the morning - we had to catch a 7am flight - with the 2 hours required before international air travel and a half hour for returning the rental car, we had to leave our B&B at 4:30 am - and missed our breakfast -one of the highlights of the B&B experience! Fortunately, Mrs Browne fixed a light snack the night before so we had something to eat before our long day traveling home!

pub and thrift shop recommendation

Hi! My family and I are taking a tour of Ireland. We're going to spend two days in Bunratty. Would anyone know if there is any thrift shops in the town? Also, can someone recommend a good pub to check out? Thanks so much!

Right across the street from Bunratty castle is a restaurant/pub. Had a great time listening to two gentleman playing pipes and fiddle.

The nearest metropolis to Bunratty is Limerick city. Try Modesty in William St., Limerick, it is a fantastic thrift store and their jean selection is great :-)

Thank you very much for the suggestion. That's where we will be staying while in Bunratty, so that's a handy thing to know.

Stay in County Clare, visit for just one day in Bunratty (the castle and folk park ) then head for nearby Ennis and the Burren. Just outside Ballyvaughan, if you can stay in a fabulous guesthouse called Drumcreehy House, overlooking the bay.

Travel Tips for Bunratty

Village Street

The village street is a recreation of what would have been seen in 19th century Ireland - you can visit the School, Doctor’s house, Pawnbrokers, Pub, Drapery, Printworks, Grocery, Hardware shop, Pottery and a Post Office.

Fairs and markets at the Village gave the farmers and the rural craftsmen an opportunity of selling their products for cash, while shops provided for the rural dwellers needs. In the early 18th century the country people provided for most of their own needs in food, clothing and supplies and bought only luxuries such as sugar, salt, tea ….The village houses and shops have been chosen from many different areas, to form a collection of typical of 19th century urban Irish buildings.

Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit anything except the school.

Bunratty Castle

If you look around this room, you will find these carvings set on a wall, near the North Solar (a “Solar” was used during the middle ages to describe an upper chamber). The small carving is supposed to be of a fertility god. Be careful, they say that if you sit under this carving, you, or your partner, will become pregnant rather quickly!

Bunratty Castle Folk Park

The Castle grounds are extensive and have various houses and buildings that show a re-creation of what life was like in rural Ireland, in the past. It all started when a farmhouse was saved and transhipped here, during the building of Shannon Airport.

Now, apart from individual buildings from around Ireland, the grounds now hold a full village, showing various shops (some of which you can buy souvenirs from) and houses, as they were in the 19th century.

While we stayed in Shannon we made a visit to the Bunratty Folk Park for the medievel banquet. It was a lot of fun and we went through quite a bit of food. It's a little cheesy, but it was our last night of the trip and a fun way to spend the last night.
