On my first trip to Ireland I discovered some things that simply perplexed me. Why do they not give you washcloths? Why are the hairdryers screwed down into a drawer in the living area? why do they only give you heavy comforters instead of a sheets and a blanket. The hotel rooms are warm...there's no need for a comforter. The staff when we arrived at Great Southern Hotel was stern almost irritated that we were there. Upon our check in we discovered that the toilet didn't flush. We told the front desk this when we left for the afternoon. They promised to get it fixed. However, they didn't take care of it that day. The next day I left a note for cleaning lady...better but still...it took some time to get it to flush. The chef in the restaurant was extremely unpleasant and again...as with other hotels...breakfast was awful and the waitresses just always seemed surprised that we wanted to eat. Also...there is nothing in Shannon...nothing at all. It's not wise to book more than one night there...on departure or arrival. Also...every time we went out for the day...our room keys wouldn't work when we returned...? There's no buffer on the doors in the hallways so at four in the morning when someone goes through those doors they bang very loudly...it's lovely when you have several people go through at that time of day.
120euro per night, standard twin beds, 2 adults, no breakfast included
Requested standard twin room and pleasantly surprised to receive a queen room on first floor. We chose this location in the airport parking lot so we could turn in our car at night, and walk to our early morning flight. It is convenient for this. This place was sold out when we arrived at 8pm, so make a reservation if you plan to stay here. There are carts out front making wheeling your luggage to the terminal a snap.
This was the least maintained of the hotels we stayed at and needs a thorough top-to-bottom freshening. The bath was small and not very clean. The room though was very large with surprising judges paneling. The “rats in the walls” someone wrote earlier are not rats, it is squeaky floorboards.
Our rate did not include breakfast but we did have a late meal in the pub, and the fish was really very good. Pub was well attended by travelers. There was a birthday party going on so someone obviously chose this as their place of celebration. The pub is “it”, there isn’t anything else around unless you go to the nearby golf course which is fairly nice, along the Shannon River.
Check-out was easy, check-in was very busy. The front desk could use one more person during the check in time in summer season. This was the only place we were charged a fee for phone access – we were using a phone card and there should not have been a fee at all.
If we could find someplace else that was as convenient for an early flight, we would probably go there. Otherwise, looks like this is the only choice at this time.
We stayed at this hotel last week and we really enjoyed our stay. Th receptionist, Emily, was very friendly and efficient and explained the details of the hotel to us. She made a reservation for us for dinner that night and we really enjoyed the food. We had a great waitress - Kathleen, who kept us amused. The convenience for the airport is fantastic. If you have any doubts having read the last few reviews, let me put your mind at ease - Book it.
We just came back from a family vacation in Ireland. We were a group of 18 people ranging in age from 8 to 82. The Great Southern Hotel at the Shannon Airport was a great place for the group to make our first stop after a long day/night of travel. This facililty offered early check in for those in the group that needed to rest. The staff was very accommodating, pleasant and efficient. The rooms were clean, adequate, comfortable and the norm for Ireland standard of hotels. The pub was lively and the breakfast was plentiful. Because of the adjacency to the airport, you literally walk across a parking lot into the lobby.
We will stay there again on our next trip to Ireland!
The front desk staff was rude and the room was dirty. Having paid over 120 euros for the room (#408)we expected more than what we received. The walls in the bathroom had mold on them, the shower was dirty and the showerhead had rust and soap scum all over it. The sheets were not clean and the comforter smelled of smoke. We stayed at 4 other hotels during our stay in Ireland (all for less $) and they were much better than the shannon hotel. Needless to say we will not stay there again and will not reccommend the hotel to anyone travelling to Ireland.

Hello, I'm looking for a nice but cheap hotel near the Shannon airport. Roomex.com seems to have great rates, but I'm nervous about purchasing that way and then showing up with no room or bad results. Has anyone used roomex.com and if so, did you have a good experience?
Thanks!
Diz
I have used Roomex to book a hotel for a weeks stay in Berlin in July past and it was very good. We had checked the price quoted by Roomex with the hotel web-site directly and Roomex including Breakfast was better than on the hotels own web-site (still can't understand it).
The hotel & room facilities was exactly as quoted on Roomex.
Hope this helps with your decision.
Thanks so much! I found a similar situation (roomex cheaper than hotel's site) but wanted to hear from someone who actually used them. Thanks again!
Hi, I book regularly with roomex. they provide an excellent service and have always been pleasant and reliable to deal with. they have two websites, www.roomex.com and www.roomexhotels.com , and you should check the availability on both. the reason they provide lower rates than with the hotels directly, is that they get hotel rooms at wholesale prices due to bulk-buying. the earlier you book with them the better as these disounted room rates tend to go quite quickly.
