Travel Tips for Blarney

The Holy Wells

by clws

It is claimed there are as many as 3,000 holy wells in Ireland - more than in any other country in the world. Where once a pagan sacrifice may have taken place, today a bride might look into the waters for good luck ,or a cripple might bathe in them, hoping for a cure.
It was believed that drinking from these holy waters or bathing in them would bestow the power of the Otherworld in the form of poetic inspiration, wisdom, or healing.

Clothing you can layer is best. Some days are cooler than others, and some start out cool but get warmer. A rain jacket is nice as well. Comfy walking shoes are a must. You will have so many photo opportunities, so be sure and bring your camera and plenty of film or a nice sized memory card and plenty of batteries! Ireland gets a lot of rain, so be sure and pack an umbrella.

According to the website it contains "a fine collection of early furniture, family portraits, tapestries and works of art." It also says there are guided tours of the house, which I believe is still occupied by the family, however, there was a sign on the front saying they would start tours again next spring. It regrettably did not specify which spring that would be....

What's Brewing In The Witches Kitchen?

by clws

Located near the Wishing Steps of the Blarney Castle Gardens, is a cave rock enclosure known as the Witches Kitchen. The gardens are wonderful to visit and finding all the nooks and crannies is a lot of fun!

by doug48

the rock close is a very interesting walk through a rocky gully near the blarney house. the path wanders along a creek and past interesting man made rock formations. pictured is the "dolman"in the rock close.
