 | Cobh Ardeen Reviews | 1 - 1 of 1 | |
by jjinswmi If you're looking for a place to stay in Cobh, try the Ardeen B & B. This is NOT the Grand Hotel, but of the 6 B&Bs and 1 hotel my wife and I stayed at during our 8 nights in Ireland, when I think back, this is the one I usually think of first. This is probably because the place had some truly memorable points and also a subtle way of endearing itself to you. Our room was on the third floor facing the street. Looking out the window you find the ocean is roughly 600 feet in front of you and you are 120 to 150 feet above it. Its a cool view. The B&B is run by a really sweet young gal whose name I will let you discover for yourselves when you book your stay there. She makes you feel very welcome and has the typical Irish freindliness. We never met her husband. The downstairs "parlor" is straight out of a 19th century period movie, think "Arsenic and Old Lace". The actual accomadations are small but totally adequate. You're brought a plate of cookies and tea when you arrive which was a nice touch. The room was "en suite" and even though the building is quite old, everything worked perfectly. Parking is on the street right outside the front door, free and perfectly safe. Our room had a queen bed, a twin and a TV. Everything was quite comfortable.
I can't tell you why exactly, but I loved Cobh. With its STEEP hills, it reminded me a lot of riverfront Dubuque IA, but with the ocean instead of the big river. The Cathedral is only 300 feet away and an absolute must see if you're into culture or architecture. The "Quays" restaurant is a 10 minute walk downhill to the waterfront. Good food, service and a nice deck to get a table on and watch the sun go down. If you're drunk or feeble, I'd recommend calling a cab for the walk back up the hill! To find the Ardeen, when you come into town, go to the cathedral. The Ardeen is about 300 feet from the cathedral on the lower street in between St Colemans and the giant "retaining wall" to the waterfront part of the town. If you're looking at St Colemans from the water, the Ardeen is to the right and below the cathedral. Theme: Bed and Breakfast
