Whitethorn Lodge: Fantastic Friendly B and B
(Updated June 2010) We have stayed at Whitethorn Lodge 5 or 6 times over the last 5 years and it has become like a 2nd home to us. (We have relatives in the area, who we regularly come and visit but who unfortunately don't have enough room to accomodate us.) Sheila and Charles almost treat us like family. Nothing is too much trouble.
The guest house is only 5 minutes walk from the centre of town and and has every amenity that you would get in the far pricier, completely impersonal, hotel around the corner.
There are several things which we especially like about Whitethorn Lodge.
(a) In addition to the warm, spacious really comfortable bedrooms, you have a large cosy lounge area to sit in and relax and make your plans for the day.
(b) You can help yourself to various snacks and drinks in the lounge, which are on sale at normal shop prices. There is an honesty box on the side with spare coins for you to take your change. Isn't that far more preferable to the rip off mini bars in hotels.
(c) The breakfasts are absolutely fantastic - They use really fresh, local ingredients and Charles (who is originally from France) has a great eye for presentation, So the food looks as good as it tastes.
(d) The house is surrounded by a lovely green, leafy garden, in which you can sit and while away the hours. It really is an oasis of calm. Also, the room where you sit and eat your breakfast looks out on the garden and over the years Charles and Sheila have regularly fed the birds, just outside that window. So as you sit and eat, you see numerous species of birds and some other wildlife. Who would not prefer that to a busy hotel on a main road !
With a lovely property like this you would think room rates would be sky high - Not a bit of it ! - They are a real bargain.

Whitethorn Lodge: Surely Skibbereen's Nicest B & B
I have stayed at Charles and Sheila's Bed and Breakfast 4 or 5 times now and suspect that I will be going back again quite soon. You really could not wish for more there. You always get a warm welcome from them and their lovely cat and 2 dogs. Although I should stress that the animals are only introduced to you if you happen to notice them outside and show an interest. Otherwise they remain firmly in the owners part of the house.
The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are spacious and quiet. You always get offered extra bedding or an electric blanket if it's cold.
Everything is spotlessly clean and works exactly as it should do.
Charles and Sheila are a mine of information, not only about Skibbereen but West Cork in general. If you happen to be visiting from a French speaking country, you will be pleased to learn that Charles is completely bi-lingual.
Unique Quality: There are so many things I like about Whitethorn Lodge it is hard to pick just one or two. But I will try.
I always look forward to breakfast. There is an excellent and unusual menu. My favourite is either pancakes with fresh fruit or sometimes I go for Charles' kippers. Full Irish breakfast is also an option. This sometimes includes yummy local black or white pudding - Of course there is toast and serials and lots of fruit juice too.
While you sit and eat, you can look at the abundance of birds and other wildlife just outside the window. It's a beautifully well kept garden and Charles and Sheila make a point of always putting food out for the birds to co-incide with your breakfast.
Instead of a rip-off mini bar in your room, there is a well stocked fridge in the lounge and an "honesty box" for you to contribute what you think the drinks you took cost.

PK LOdge: Great Views, Excellent Food
Kathleen & Pat O'Donovan are phenomenal hosts. They anticipate a guest's every need and make sure that you are more than comfortable from the second you arrive. The beds are super comfortable, the linens were crisp and cool. A plus was in being able to open the windows to enjoy the night breezes. The breakfast was delicious, as kathleen does the baking herself. They took great care to assure that I had no killer mushrooms anywhere near my plate, utensils or the pans in which breakfast was cooked.
PK Lodge sits about a two minute drive or a easy ten minute walk from Skibbereen. It was very convenient for walking to & from the pubs the night that we stayed.
Unique Quality: Totally non-smoking
Plentiful private parking
Bright color schemes for each room.
My favorite was the Sunny yellow for the sitting room and breakfast area. It was definitely very energizing!

Whitethorn Lodge: Best place to stay in Skibbereen
Exceptional Bed & Breakfast within walking distance of Skibbereen. Also very good for a driving/sightseeing trip in beautiful West Cork. The Irish/French couple who run this B&B are friendly & hospitable. The rooms are very comfortable and of a high standard. Breakfast is wonderful especially the pancakes with fresh fruit. As you have breakfast you have a lovely view of the gardens and can also enjoy seeing a variety of birds swoop down to the birdtable/bath. There are also two lovely small dogs and the house cat. A very relaxing place. All for a very reasonable price.
Good for animal/nature lovers, will add to your holiday.
