Great little hotel in Dublin

Booked the O'Callaghan Mont Clare Hotel thru a travel agent and when we got there it was overbooked! They called their sister hotel, O'Callaghan Alexander Hotel (4 stars), and we walked around the corner (with a bellman taking our luggage).
The O'Callaghan Alexander Hotel was a great little hotel! Though the room was smaller than what we are used to the US, it was comfortable and the beds were great! The bathroom was a nice size, and great amentities! A great bath and shower, nice sized.
We had high tea in the lobby (they did let us check in early), and then toured Dublin before heading out on the road!

By the Merion Square

The hotel is in the nice old building, but inside is very spacious and has contemporary feel. The room was roomy, nice and very comfortable.

It's located by the Merion Square, and near National Gallery.

Unique Quality: Wireless Internet connection in room and the public area.

Good base for quality trip ......

Great Hotel to use as a base of some quality whilst on your stay. 4* rated and rightly so.

Bit of a business hotel really and therefore lacks any real "Irish Quality" other than being located near the city centre. A 5-10min walk around Trinity College will have you slap bang in the centre. The shops and some nightlife is closer.

A good base but not an Irish experience

Unique Quality: Night porter is very freindly and accommodating plus all the other staff.

Bar and reception area is very comfy.

Food is good but lacks any theatre or Irishness.

More about Alexander Hotel

Good Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member vikhawk

Stayed here in April, 2005. Was looking for a decent hotel in a great location. The Alexander is centrally located - a few blocks east of Trinity College. It was about a block from the Merrion Square Airport bus stop so it is convenient. The rooms were basic - nothing fancy but they were modern and clean. Paid $140 a night for two people without breakfast (got price through internet). Dublin has gotten very expensive so this was a pretty good price. Would definitely recommend it for visitors to Dublin.

Gym..what gym?

Just got back from a fantastic weekend in Dublin. First two nights stayed in the Alexander Hotel.
Nice and clean.. good location but not really as its says on the ads, wouldnt put this down as a 4 star.
Gym isnt really a gym, a room with some acquipment in it! Treadmills where dangerous..
Alot of noise from the pub next door, that kept me up till late on the Friday night/ Saturday am!

but its clean, modern and serves its purpose

chilly...

Just returned from a weekend at the Alexander and really mixed feelings. It could have been fine but it was almost like they were so used to being good that when we had problems they were so mystified that they couldn't do anything about it.
It was a very cold weekend in Dublin and the heating in our room didn't work. The heater made a lot of noise but didn't actually produce any heat that mattered, so after a very chilly night we asked for an extra blanket and a heater for the room. That was promised, and we went out for the day but nothing had appeared when we got back. After a phone call they produced a blanket and one of the receptionists came and poked at the heater but couldn't make it work. Apparently the heating at their sister hotel had broken and so they'd sent all their heaters there. So another chilly night.
An engineer was promised the next day but didn't arrive. When we checked out the receptionist asked about our stay and we said that besides being cold all the time..... the guy was amazed and said that of course they could have produced a heater if we'd asked. He pointed under the desk and said, look we've been so cold we've had a heater under here for days. Hmmmm. Irritating really.
As for the rest of it, well room was clean but for the usual mouldy shower curtain. Room was plenty big enough and the bed very comfy. Staff in the dining room very efficient and they restock the breakfast buffet up right until the close of breakfast so you get fed well. Lounge has really comfy sofas but - yes you guessed it - cold all the time we were there.

Having read the other reviews I think we were just unlucky, we dealt with a receptionist who wasn't really interested in helping us - the others were better. The receptionist who promised help was the same one who, when asked if she could try a number for us because we weren't getting through said, "well if you can't get through I don't suppose I will either". Hmmmm.

Happy with our choice

I booked this hotel 1 week before we travelled to Dublin, booked direct through O'Callaghans website and paid 99 euros a night.

Very handy for airport bus and a 10 minute walk to Grafton Street and a further 10 minutes to Temple Bar. Hotel is in a quiet street with little traffic noise which was welcome as I found Dublin to be very congested.

Reception staff very friendly, Rooms clean and decorated to a good standard. Would definately stay in this hotel or indeed one of the other 2 O'Callaghan hotels on the same street.

Great hotel

Stayed in the Alexander over the weekend. Was really nice and clean. Lovely lobby. Clean bathroom with a bathtub. Very close to Trinity College and easy walk anywhere in central Dublin. Have stayed in other three star hotels around Europe and this was definitely quite a bit nicer.
