In the Center of the Action
Unique Quality: I haven't actually stayed at this hostel, but I have stayed at the one in Galway. If you're into pub-hopping and staying out late then this is probably your best bet in Dublin. It's smack dab in the center of the action at Temple Bar, but it's also fairly close to the Busaras and Connelly Train Stations. If you want some quiet at night, though, then I would reccommend the Ashfield House or Kinlay Christ Church, which are still close but not in the middle.

Can't beat the location!
This hostel was very clean, and more like a hotel than hostel! The common rooms were very large and comfy, and we met many nice people there. The staff was very pleasant, and reception was open 24hrs. The best thing about Barnacles was the location. The location was AMAZING, it was located about a half block from Temple Bar, right in the heart of Dublin. Everything was within walking distance, it was just perfect.
There were a couple problems with this hostel. First, parking was a disaster. We had rented a car, and parking was very expensive in the city. However, this was hardly the hostel's fault, you will encounter this problem anywhere in the city! Another downside to this hostel was that the rooms in the hostel were impossibly small. The bunkbeds were crammed in the room, leaving literally no room to move around in. This made it quite awkward when I was awoken to the sound of two people humping in the bunk next to me! The rooms were also very, very warm, which made for an uncomfortable sleeping environment.
However, I would probably stay in this hostel again. You really can't beat the location, which makes it a great place to crash after a night out.

Temple Bar Area
I had friends stay here and got good reports. There is a laundry and drying facilities and its right in the middle of Temple Bar, although l don't know what the noise level is like at night. The have on offer 4,6 10, and 12 bedded rooms all with toilet and shower. From 9 Euro per person. Bedlinen is provided free and you can hire towels at reception. You can also store your luggage under the bed in a secure box with a key provided, you need to hire a key for this. The hostel operate an electronic key card system so your luggage and personal belongings are safe. The kitchen is fully equipped and a light breakfast is served free of charge.

The best located hostel
This youth hostel is definetely the best located in Dublin City, the heart of Temple Bar, one of the most popular destinations in Europe.
It is at a short walk from the train and bus stations. Less than 5 minute walks from the main landmarks suchas Trinity College, Dublin Castle, etc.
Make sure to book in advance as it is always full!

If you want to stay close to Temple Bar
Unique Quality: This hostel is good for one particular group of people: party animals. Conveniently located in the Temple Bar area, it puts you right in the thick of things and keeps you close enough so that you can stumble home after an extensive Guinness tasting at whichever pub you might choose.
Rates vary depending on if you want a private room or dormitory style room.

Decent, as far as Hostels go
I stayed here just one night, and missed the breakfast. However, it was a very good hostel.
Right smack bang in the centre of Dublin, and Temple Bar, the location is excellent. And it wasn't noisy, which was my conern with it being in the bar area.
There were 4 of us and we hired a 4 bed bunk. It was clean and tidy, and the staff really friendly.
If you forget to bring a towel like I did, you can "hire" one for 5 euro. when you return the towel you get your euro back.

Location, location, location!
Stayed here during the week in November. The location is awesome...a couple feet away from the Temple Bar. Some people complain about the noise, but honestly, last call at Temple Bar is 12:30am, and after that, it was quiet. Rooms use key cards and there is always someone at the reception desk. Private bathrooms in each room, push-button showers, I think. Internet cafe around the corner.
But the bad thing is the room itself. Poor lighting. Ridiculously small and overcrowded. I didn't even have enough floorspace to pull out the luggage-storage drawer under the bed. Always felt like I was sitting on someone's else's stuff. Made worse by a group of travelers who hadn't learned yet to not yell across the room while others were sleeping.
Unique Quality: Very good rates in off-season, especially considering the location.

Value for your money
Excellent location, friendly staff, friendly people to hang out with. It is a bit noisy (obviously because of the location!) but I didn't have any trouble sleeping even with the window open. Rooms were clean and the bed was pretty comfortable. For a room of 6 there could be a bit more hot water, since a cold shower isn't always what u look for. Only real minus comes from the breakfast - a couple of slices of white toast, a cup of instant coffee and water tasting vaguely like juice doesn't really give a kick start for your day. But would/will definitely stay there again, cause u know, u don't go there to eat!
Unique Quality: As mentioned, the location couldn't be better.

A Cheap Place to Sleep
Barnacle's is weird. It's a little like sleeping in a Bennigan's (the annoying restaurant) - - the walls are all painted an annoyingly fesitve shade of yellow or orange, the staff have permanent smiles glue to their faces, and the place is totally, and without question, spotless. I didn't like this place too much - too polished and coporate-like for me. I like places where you can sit down and talk to the owner . . . because he or she lives there. However, it has a lot to offer to make up for this.
First off, it's location is very, very convenient and (though they could be mistaken at any moment for Irish Barbie and Dubliner Ken) the staff is helpful and knowlegeable. Also, there's practical perks like a full kitchen and laundry. And, because it is a corporate-owned chain, Barnacle's is cheaper than the other guys in town. Plus, there's no curfew, no lockout, and plenty of storage lockers for your crap.
There were a lot of rules, though - no smoking, no television room after a certain hour, no this, no that. If you are strapped for cash, or if you brought a family that you don't necessarily want exposed to whatever bacteria hostiles typically bloom, then I'd say this is your place. Otherwise, I'd try and find a more independent venue.

Dublins best hostel
We had reserved another hostel by internet as we were moving to Dublin for a couple of months. The hostel we booked was terrible. After meeting a few other travellers we were guided to Temple Bar House. We stayed for 2 weeks until we found accommodation. Barnacles is clean, warm, secure and the staff were just ace in helping us find work and making us feel at home They have movies and free tea and coffee in the evening so if you are on a budget there is some free entertainment and a great chance to meet up with other travellers. Highly recommended.
Unique Quality: Central; spotlessly clean, movies in the evening, helpful staff, weekly rate.

Age 54, seeks a welcoming hostel
Can anyone recommend a hostel in Dublin that welcomes someone my age? I'm 54 and am planning a 5-month solo trip around the world. I need to find inexpensive places to stay the night, but am unsure if travelers my age are welcome at hostels, considering their youth orientation. Elsewhere, I'll be mostly camping.

Your age really shouldn't be a problem!
Have found this site, listed with tons of cheap hostels, would probably reccomend Barnacles Temple Bar House, as its smack bang in the middle of Temple Bar!

Try the Abbey Hostel or the one mentioned above in Temple Bar, the rest of hostels in Dublin are situated in an area called Gardiner St/Talbot St which is a dump.
