very pleasant trip

After reading some of the reviews for Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel Killiney, we had fairly low expectations. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. Our room was spacious, comfortable, very nicely decorated and we had a lovely sea view. Breakfast was included in the price and was tasty and satisfying. I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning to stay in the Killiney area.
As for the Guinea Pig restaurant in nearby Dalkey, it was fine. Not knock-your-socks-off gorgeous, just average. Desserts are very over-priced, almost 20 Euro for 5 strawberries and 3 profiteroles.

We stayed at the Fitzpatrick Castle in August 2006. I knew in advance via posts not to expect a "castle", but it made little difference. We were treated like kings and had a beautiful family room on the 4th floor. I would suggest that you hire the hotel car if you are coming in from the airport. Martin the driver gave us a little tour of the area and was very pleasant. Dalkey and the DART station is a 15 minute walk from the hotel, downhill. But after a long day in Dublin it is a 20 minute walk uphill. We ordered the breakfast with our rooms and was pleasantly surprised. There was always pleanty of staff and everyone was friendly. The grounds were very nice and my wife loved the Fitness center. Dalkey is a quiet little town with great eats and was a nice little change. I would reccommend this hotel to everyone and would stay here again.

Having stayed at the Fitzpatrick Castle in feb 2005, decided to have my 40th birthday weekend there with 11 other ladies!.
Just got back from a fantastic weekend.
Couldnt fault any member of staff, all very friendly, very helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
Our rooms were all clean & spacious.
The breakfast was excellent, and our meal in the Dungeon Bar & Grill was faultless.
Leisure facilities we great, good size pool, steamroom and sauna, the gym looked well equipt but we didint have time to sample it, too busy in the bar.
We also thought that for a hotel the price of drinks in the Library Bar were very reasonable, ( we did drink rather a lot!)
A very big thank you from all 12 of us for what was and will be a very pleasant memorable break.
We will be back! Just need an excuse.

Don't waste your money on the breakfast. $71 euros for a buffet breakfast for four that
had been sitting in the serving trays much too long collecting about a quarter inch of moisture. As unappetizing as you can imagine.
Rooms are well worn, but they are large. It looks like they have been using the same bedding and decor for the past twenty years.
The hotel itself looks like a La Quinta painted green with an unnatural facade.
Nice Place To Stay Outside Dublin

We stayed here for two nights at the end of June. It isn't really a castle but it is located in a quiet spot at the top of a hill with a nice view of the water. You can easily head to the beaches in Bray etc. and it's a short train ride to the center of Dublin. The hotel rooms are fine and the facilities are very good. I didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. Overall, a nice place to stay on outskirts of Dublin.
Overall a let down - Not a castle but a nice location.

The hotel is very tricky to find, but we thought worth the efort as there is a good train link to Dublin central area. The little villages/towns on the bay area where the hotel is situated are great.
The disappointment though was with the poor cleanliness of the room and the service in the hotel and restaurants. This was so bad we had to get up and leave before they took any notice of us.
It just gave the feeling of being understaffed and needing some money spending on it. ver poor value comp[ared to the radisson we stayed in for the rest of our holiday.

My husband and I stayed here for one night and we had a fantastic time!! We were upgraded to the royal suite which was a fantastic room (King size bed, tv, cd player, large bathroom, double balcony great views over dublin) but the rest of the rooms with balconies would also have had a great view. The lounge is very relaxing, with old fashioned afternoon teas, we sat for hours drinking coffee and reading and chatting, very cosy and relaxing! Staff were friendly and helpful, and we had dinner in the Dungeon restaurant of the hotel, and the meal was lovely. We ordered breakfast for room service so we could enjoy it on the balcony, and were very pleased with the selection we recieved (cereal, cooked breakfast, juice, fruit, tea, toast ).
We will definately be staying at the Fitzpatrick again, Highly recommended!!
Great hotel but a bit noisy after a wedding party

We got a great deal, including breakfast, booking through the Ryanair site & can't fault the friendliness of the staff at the hotel.
The rooms were spacious, beautifully furnished & spotlessly clean. The public rooms are comfortable, busy & interesting if you like people watching.
We were pleasantly surprised how inexpensive it was to eat in the hotel after being told that Ireland was the most expensive capital in Europe. The service was professional, courteous & always delivered with that wonderful Irish humour. The health centre was also spotlessly clean & very quite most of the time.
The only downside was the noise after the wedding parties. We were kept awake until 4am one morning purely the fault of the law of not allowing smoking indoors in public places. Guests are forced to stand outside to smoke & chat. Unfortunately this was just below our room. We have every intention of returning, & although we loved our suite we will request a quiet room away from the main entrance.
No problem finding the hotel, we hired a Hertz rental car from the airport & used the SatNav after using the hotel’s own directions to get us round the M50. The new portion hadn't been updated on the ‘Neverlost’ system. If you go in the near future also watch out for the trial one way system round St Stephen’s Green in the centre of Dublin if you decide to drive in.
Don't forget to buy fresh soda bread at the local bakery in Dalkey - absolutely delicious!
Better hotels out there

We stayed at the Fitzpatrick over the Thanksgiving holiday. It was the most expensive hotel out of all during our stay and was certainly not worth the money. There are better hotels or the same quality hotels for less money. Everything was an extra charge (certain normal TV channels, internet, etc) and there was an older smell. The staff was pleasant. I just don't think it is worth staying here. Not a lot to do nearby and very cheesy decor in the rooms and restaurants. My advice...pick somewhere else.

Dublin to Killiney

I will be doing a Pub Crawl in Dublin with some buddies this December. We have the opportunity to stay relatively free in Fitzpatrick Castle Holiday Homes (close to the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel)in Killiney County Dublin. Would transportation to and from Dublin make this location a viable option for a one week stay or should we locate ourselves closer to the city and forego the savings?

There is frequent buses (no 59) so I think it would be. Have a look at www.dublinbus.ie for more info on timetables and if there is a few of you going then you can always get a taxi back!

When I stayed in Killiney in the late Jurassic period (well, a long time ago), there was frequent train service up into the city, which is how I commuted in and out, staying with family friends in Killiney.
I see that the hotel says that it is about a mile from the train station - see http://www.fitzpatrickcastlehotel.com/Fitzpatrick_Castle_Hotel_Location.html .
My guess is that this area near the water will be relatively flat, so that walking to the station will not be a problem (I had to walk up and down the long slope running away from the sea).
It's funny that it's only 9 miles from the city center...in the 70s, it felt like you were much farther away than that ;-)

I wanted to clarify my comments...it's not that it took forever to get into the city center from Killiney (it was only 30 minutes or so?), but that - like many European places in those days - you went from urban setting (in Dublin) to rural setting (in Killiney) rather quickly, so that in Killiney, you had a hard time believing that the major city of Ireland was only a few miles away...nowadays, of course, Dublin's growth may have expanded out to Killiney and beyond...
To me, other things being equal, staying relatively free in Killiney - if you has good access to rail/bus - would save you a ton of money with little loss of convenience over staying in the city center...knock on wood...

If you are planning on pub crawling then Killiney fitzPatricks may not be the best place for you. Sorry Zone but have to disagree, the 59 is an awful bus service. The Dart is doable but its all uphill on the way back and the last train leaves the city centre at 11.30. So you'll be relying on Taxi's which should cost you about 30 euro from the centre. Of course you could go for a pub crawl in Dalkey one or two nights and you could stagger back up-hill after that :-)

The farther you stay away the better it will be for all of us. Just kidding! I found ya, homes. Ya think we could find a little better place than the two you suggested. Both seem to have noise problems.
