Stamps?

by travelgarfield

Hello again: I am counting the days down for my trip to Ireland. Can anyone tell me where I may buy some postage stamps to send postcards once I arrive at the airport in Dublin? I think I remember reading on the Dublin Airport about a postal box to send mail but is there also a machine to buy some POSTCARD stamps? Do most hotels sell postcard stamps such as in the U.S.? And how much does it cost for a POSTCARD STAMP in Euro cents?

Planning to visit: Hard Rock Cafe in Dublin
Day trip to the Cliffs of Moher (hoping the weather will be good- right now where I am in the mountains, it is snowing, raining and about 40 - 50 degrees)
And hoping the Iceland Volcano does not ruin my flight plans!! Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have never noticed a stamp place at the airport in Dublin but that is not to say there is not somewhere. The hotels I have stayed in will post letters for you.
Otherwise I have gone to the post offices.
One thing you often need to buy your special post envelopes and boxes at stationery shops
...not many post offices have much if anything....I am not sure about the O'Connell street one which is the main PO. But be sure of your posting material before lining up esp in small centres. Usually there are scales to weigh parcels handy.

I doubt there are special 'postcard' stamps.

You will have to pay the ordinary postal rate for sending mail to the US.

You will be able to buy stamps at any Post Office, of course, but I'm not sure if you can buy them at newsagents/shops etc as you can in the UK....can't remember.

Here's info on the stamp machine at Dublin airport:

You do not need to worry about the volcano. The closure of airspace is now formally acknowledged by the UK government as an over-cautious reaction.

Newsagents and gift shops usually only stock local stamps, not international ones. You'll need to go to a post office for those. The main PO on O'Connell has a couple of dedicated counters specifically for stamps.

Yes, good point John...you will almost certainly need to go to a PO to get the correct value stamps (and certainly the Air Mail sticker). Or you could use more than one lower-value stamp (i.e. those which would normally be used in Ireland) to the required amount+.

I bought my stamps at the general post office on O'Connell Street which is worth a look anyway as it's a historic building

And, as you say Dabs, the GPO is worth a visit in it's own right, historically architecturally (is that a word?) and for it's arstisanally-worked functional interior. It's a place where tourists buy their stamps alongside locals renewing their TV licences - lovely place.

Thank you all. Sounds like I will be making a trip to the main Post Office on O'Connell Street. I appreciate all the quick replies.

Travel Tips for Dublin

A coastal walk in Dalkey

by LisaStern

A local train DART will take you to the Dublin Riviera in no time. Dalkey and the adjacent Killiney Bay with its winding roads and mediterranean villas and unbelievable vistas over Irish Sea will steal your heart. Its home to Enya, Bono and the likes..... A drive along the Howth road with a friend followed by an Irish coffee in Abbey Tavern in the Howth village... Sandymount Strand on a warm July night... Lunch at Caviston's the fishmongers... watching the ferries going to Liverpool at sunset from the Lighthouse... not enough space to list everything...

COLOURFUL CITY

by hevbell

Another thing that I really love about Dublin is just how colourful it is! Lots of painted buildings or colourful adornments. Really brightens the place up and adds to the lively feeling. Even the castle gets in on the action!

The Floozie in the Jacuzzi

by Deefstes

I think few people really know this statue by the real name of Anna Livia. I still don't know who and what she was but she's got a statue in O'Connel street and she's known as The Floozie in the Jacuzzi.

Footnote: I haven't been to Dublin since the completion of the spire and I believe that they might have removed this terrible statue. It'll be a blessing if they have but I'll check on it when I go back to Dublin in March.

Football

by sabsi

In 1990 - just after the football world cup where Germany won - we came to Ireland who did really well in the world cup and everyone still was in football fever (read 'The Van by Roddy Doyle' about this! My favourite book!). So whenever we met someone in the pub we were asked 'And how do you feel as a world champion?' and we always replied 'We didn't play'. That's when we found out that the Irish are the friedliest people on earth!!!!!! :-)
