Hello All
by 1rosedale
I have just booked a flight to Ireland for my husband's 60th birthday. 10 to 15 friends from Canada will be showing up as a surprise in Dublin on March16,2011. I am looking for recommendations as to where to have the get together. It would be good to have some Irish music and good food. I know this will be a busy time in Dublin so I am looking to book something. I would appreciate any suggestions.

One pub I can recommend is The Hairy Lemon---they have some rooms towards the back, some open to the air and some enclosed that would be great to hide the friends----walking in, just you and him for a Guiness or 2 and surprised by the greeters! I am sure they have live music as most do at times----

O Donogue's on Merrion Row is a good spot for traditional music and has seperate areas so you could hide friends for surprise, there's no food, but directly across the road is Foley's bar and restaurant so you could cross over and back.
O'Neills on Suffolk Street is quite large, central, and does food late.
It could be difficult to book tables in any pubs on the night of the 16th though.

I think Johnny Foxes pub in Glencullen would be ideal for a birthday celebration. It's located in the Dublin mountains so surrounded by spectacular scenery, serves great food, has entertainment and can cater for groups. Have a look at their website www.jfp.ie for more details. A private bus company runs a bus to and from the city centre or you could probably arrange a private mini-bus hire for your group. (Transport details on the site too). AM

Another suggestion might be to move yourself out of the city completely and consider staying somewhere like Skerries. Skerries is about 20 minutes from the airport and has some excellent rail and bus links to the city. Accommodation is plentyful and I expect even more so at that time of year whereas Dublin city might be a little crowded. Skerries is a pretty little town (I am biased) with plenty of pubs and restaurants. There is usually a St Patricks Day Parade in the town and there will DEFINITELY be music in a number of the pubs. A number of pubs in Skerries such as Blue on the Harbour or Nealons on Church Street will have music. Blue also does really good food and they will reserve an area for you. Carrolls Pier House Hotel does great food and has accommodation. Red Bank is a little more upmarket, but the food is award winning and they also have rooms. If you think this is something you'd like to consider, let me know and I'll dig a bit deeper for you.

Travel Tips for Dublin
Dublin Castle Garden
by 36waterfalls
The garden of Dublin Castle can be viewed best from the second floor of the Chester Beatty Library (entrance free). The warden told me the Celtic pattern in the grass stands for fertility. Also on the border of the green are tiny lights: this space doubles as a helicopter deck! Apperently you should ask Bill Clinton... (these are the warden's words, so don't blame me for giving you wrong information!)
Anyway: I think it's a good story for such a pretty space in the heart of the city.
Take a cab and pretend you're dutch
by grift71
Take a cab, just tell the driver you're dutch (even if you're not) and enjoy the many many many (MANY) jokes about how the dutch team did not manage to qualify for the football (that's soccer) World Cup. (Yes, we were kicked out by the Irish... lucky guess?) I went to Dublin to work for a week and I returned having had one of the most fun weeks ever.
Webcam O'Connell Bridge
by HORSCHECK
A brilliant live view of Dublin is provided by a webcam at the busy O'Connell Bridge.
The photo on the left was taken by this webcam on the 12th July 1997 at 20:58 h GMT when a friend of mine stood on the pavement near the traffic lights. He is the boy with the white shirt in the middle of the lower photoborder.

Irish words
by IrishFem
A "snug".. a snug is a small room off a lounge or bar in a pub, where you can drink with a little more privacy. You can't book them its first come first served. Most snugs have about 3 to 4 tables. Years ago in Dublin most women were not served in pubs or bars, in order to keep us in place snugs were built so we would not be seen. Indeed all that has changed us girls are allowed in now without being directed to the Snugs. However,it is nice to sit in one and have your own barman serve you without having to wait in a q.
An Lar... which you will see on some buses means city centre. It does not always mean the bus in heading in that direction...
In some pubs you might see the following signs for toilets or rest rooms.: Mna or Fir
Mna means Women and Fir is for Men.. I know it confusing... but thats the Irish for you..
Garda Siochana
This is our unarmed police force. Translated it means Guardian of the Peace.
Gaeltacht
An Irish speaking area in the country.
Oireachtas
Means the Irish Parliament.
Teachta Dala (TD's)
Elected representatives of Dail Eireann, the lower house of the Republic of Ireland Parliament. Know as TD's,
