Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostal

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on April 23, 2012

I had a pretty good experience in this hostel. We stayed in an 8 person room, which had 4 bunk beds and a private bathroom. The common dining area was fine and had indoor and outdoor seating. I believe they usually had bread and cereals out for free breakfast. There was also a common kitchen for guests to use.

The best part about this place is that it's in the perfect location for enjoying the Dublin night life. Although, I recommend stepping outside of the Temple Bar area and looking for some off-the-beaten-path local pubs!

The only negative I have to comment on was that the hostel only allowed us one key for the whole room. It was a small inconvenience because our room was comprised of us, a group of 5 college girls, a couple backpacking, and a quiet girl who we ran into only once. We were asked to leave the key at the front desk if we were the last group leaving the room, but when it came around to coming in at night, whoever had gone to sleep first had to wake up 2 more times to let the rest of the roommates in. Just a small negative, but it worked.

Unique Quality: A great part of this hostel was that you got a coupon for a free pint or bailey's at the adjoining bar. The bar was crowded the whole weekend, but it was multiple levels, live music, and a fun atmosphere.

They also handed out a whole bunch of tourist guides, coupons for restaurants and bars, and even a disc with some Irish music to listen too. Definitely a great perk!
