A short drive north of the city of Galway is the town of Corandula and Cregg Castle. This is a wonderful B&B experience. It may not be Ashford Castle's 5 star establishement, but it IS a wonderful little Castle. And the lovely people who run it make this a personal favorite. I can't recommend Cregg Castle highly enough!!!!! marvelous hosts, warm hospitality, great music in the evening, and excellent food!!!
Q is for quite the best hotel i've ever stayed in

This really is five star luxury. James Bond actor Brosnan hired the whole place out for his wedding !
The Castle setting is very impressive with the lake behind and a 9-hole golf course in front.
One one of the holes Gary Player made it in two shots - and when you look at the severe dog-leg you realise quite what an achievemnent it was.
Just look at the website to see the quality of the place. If you ask, and you are a resident, they will also give you a tour of the place including the most expensive suite (wow!)
Website: www.Ashford.ie Very relaxing location nice walking and sports including Salmon fishing right in front of the hotel.
One of the world's finest settings

Surprisingly in the off season you can get hold of some very reasonale deals. As a mark of quite how good I think it is...We spenty our Honeymoon there. Very relaxing location nice walking and sports including Salmon fishing right in front of the hotel.
The setting on the lake is quite awe-inpiring (and that's not a word I use lightly)...it is almost too perfect.
Ashford

Close to the town of Cong, at the north banks of Lough Corrib, you will find the fairytale castle of Ashford. This Ashford Castle is the second largest castle of Ireland and it is built in the 13th century. It is situated wonderfully between a beautiful, large golf course and the lake and it is only a 30 minutes drive from the city of Galway.
The castle was originally built by the Bugos family and it was later renovated and expanded Benjamin Guinness after he bought it in 1850. The Guinnesses sold the castle in 1945 and from that moment on it was turned into a luxurious 5 star hotel: once of the best in the whole of the country.
The castle, be also the complete area around it, is beautiful to see. It is completely surrounded by dark forest, green lawns and the nice lake. From the castle you can also make a boat trip over the Lough Corrib.

I loved the atmosphere in Ashford..

I have been spending the past 7 years in Dromoland Castle, so decided to go to Ashford Castle last Christmas, I had such a ball, the hotel is dull compared to dromoland had more of a warm scene to the hotel, the food in dromoland was alot better, but the atmosphere in Ashford was fantastic.
It was absolutely fantastic, I enjoyed the late night dancing and cocktails every night. I meet loads of new friends, and I cant wait to return their again this Christmas to be reunited with my friends.
I would recommend this hotel to any one young or old who wants to kick off their shoes for some late night dancing. The entertaiment at night was alot better than Dromoland. It is more livelier and night aswell.
Really looking forward to returning their again this Christmas for some late night dancing.
The Magical Stay

This was a Christmas present for my wife.My friend did the same for his wife.
I have to say never in my travels have i been made so welcome as Ashford Castle.
The staff were magnificent from senior management to housekeeping, from bar staff to porters and administration.
Our stay was truly magical and we will never forget our weekend 20th to 22nd January.
A special mention for some of the staff we met; John in the bar very funny,June in housekeeping so friendly, the whole team in the restaurant very friendly but extremely professional.
Thank you all at Ashford

There isn't anything negative I can say about Ashford Castle. Everything was unbelievable! When we checked in, our room wasn't ready so they upgraded us. We had an unreal view of the lake with a large room. My husband didn't bring a jacket so they provided one for him at their 5 star restaurant. The food and service was the best we have ever had. The staff was friendly and went out of their way! We did the falconry (expensive but so worth it), the clay shooting (fun, fun, fun) and rented a small boat and went on the lake. We liked it so much, we asked to stay an extra night and it was no problem. We used the spa facilities (the services were already booked) and it was great to do before dinner each night. The dungeon bar with the lady singing with the song book is a little cheesy. IT IS A MUST STAY!!!
12th Century Wonder, must see

A one night stay began with a pleasant greeting and an upgrade to a Suite. The view was spectacular, the suite was spacious, and the bonus of a newly renovated (or at least it appeared just renovated) large, bathroom, equipped with a large bathtub, and a seperate shower, (with excellent water pressure). The grounds are excuisite and had flowers still in bloom. The service was pleasant and helpful. Make reservations for dinner and don't touch the silver covers until they tell you to! The Dungeon was a fun treat, and the 9 hole golf course was full of wonderful views, although a bit soggy, but worth it to play a round. Very romantic and very serene and relaxing if you have the money to splurge. It is well worth it to stay, or to just go and tour the grounds! A wonderful trip, and I now have a romantic tale to tell that goes with my once in a lifetime engagement ring (and more importantly wonderful other half).
Some tips for your stay at Ashford
by TripAdvisor Member RoomRaider69
Ashford has world-class service in such an unexpected corner of Ireland. Plan to stay at least two nights to enjoy it all, then plan to return.
Castle residents have use of several public rooms that are typically seen only in museums with velvet ropes. There are three bar options, and the nightly music in the Dungeon Bar at 10PM is not to be missed. A couple of daily cruises are offered on the Lough, plus the other recreation options. Staff are unusually friendly and lack the snottiness that ruins so many 5-star hotels.
Our room--upgraded to a small lakeview room from "run of the house"--was very nice and the bed very warm, though the castle showed its age with leaky windows and a bathroom door that wouldn't quite shut all the way. Bath amenities are excellent, but hair conditioner is not provided (BYO, ladies). There was a very discreet flat-screen TV in a corner and big windows on two sides, which made the small room seem larger. The room was very quiet, except for the hissing of the wind in the leaky windows.
It is essential to book ahead, as the castle is often booked-out entirely for corporate events or weddings. They appear to offer several special packages and excellent off-season rates. The property handled a change to our reservation very easily.
A few notes:
1) There is no cheap food option. Dinner in George V is Eur 65 + 15% tax (which we did not try). Instead, we had dinner in the Drawing Room lounge, but it still came to Eur 88 for two. Breakfast is excellent--on par with what one would expect in a 5-star hotel, including such options as black pudding, a carving station, 6 warm options, and an extensive fruit selection including a bucket of sliced kiwis.
2) The front car-park is often full when you arrive, but park at the "no parking" sign and leave your key at reception. They'll move your car to a back lot for you and bring it around when you need it.
3) There is wifi in all public areas for Eur 5 per hour. Don't buy a scratchard from reception (for which they charge Eur 10 per hour). Just find the 'tsunami' network and pay by credit card. Unfortunately, there is no internet access in the rooms.
4) Check-out the extensive memorabilia collection upstairs and sign the guestbook on the 2nd floor.
5) Beware of telephone charges. The hotel has a card saying to call a certain number for good calling rates, but that service charges $12.68 for the first minute for credit card calls to the USA.
6) Bring an alarm. There is no clock in the room, and staff did not give us our requested wake-up call on the day we were to depart for the airport.

Does anyone know if Ashford Castle ever offers discount rates in July?
Re: Ashford Castle

if you contact them, they may tell you about some special offers on, but given that July is high season, i would be surprised if they would have a lot of offers on.
