myself and a friend had a recent stay at Barnacles in Galway, we had stayed here before, and found it to be a nice visit, however we felt the staff were not that friendly and were very unhelpful.
however this time when we stayed, we again found the staff to be extremely unhelpful and very unfriendly. We stayed in a dorm room, which is way too small for 4 people, and the room had no air conditioning, we did have a window, which was above the bunk bed, however only opens 2 inches, as a chain was restricting it, which caused our room to be unbearably hot, if all members of the room were at home, it was impossible for us all to stand up,without bumping into each other, also the showers are far too hot, and the whole bathroom becomes a steam-room, adding to heat in the dorm.
also the hostel is exchange student friendly, and the shared kitchen was impossible to use, and you are made feel unwelcome when cooking your dinner as the students are constantly in the kitchen, also barnacles offers you 15mins of free internet which we did not get to use as the students had also occupied the common room, and again felt unwelcome in there.
the only thing we can not deny is that Barnacles does have a fabulous location, and we loved Galway city, however we will not stay in Barnacles again, we left feeling very unhappy with the service we got, and as barnacles is cheaper than a hotel, we also feel we paid far too much for what we got in the end.
the only people we would recommend the hostel to are exchange groups!
Stayed in Barnacle's one night. Bunk beds in a hot, cramped room in a loud area. Don't plan on going to sleep before 1:00 a.m. Front desk staff was courteous, though. And the location, given all the minuses, can't be beat.
Unique Quality: Superb location right in the middle of the bustle.
Barnacles is situated in Galway's main street for pubs. Extremely central, the staff is great and prices are low.
Only shadow to the picture: dorms are not extremely clean. But that was probably because people in my room were not very clean...
Unique Quality: Free breakfast every morning, cheaper or same price as most of the other hostels yet much cleaner and more secure.
Barnacles is located right in the middle of town. When you walk out the front door you are on the main pedestrian street. Surrounding the hostel are great restaurants and bars and
I stayed here for a weekend with a group of friends and we had a great dorm room overlooking the bustling street while some of my companions had a double. Both rooms were clean and had everything we needed. Reception had a hairdryer and a phone charger as we had forgotten ours. The hostel is staffed 24 hours which was brill. I would highly recommend Barnacles in Galway.
Unique Quality: Great fun looking out the windows watching the world go by. Iron, hairdryers, towels and phone chargers available so you dont need to bring the kitchen sink.
I'm kind of in the middle about this place. Yes, the location is fantastic. It's about a five minute walk to the train and bus stations and located on the most happening street in Galway. You literally walk out the door and have a plethora of cafes, restaurants, and other shops to choose from. And it's located on a pedestrian only zone. However, the rooms are tiny. I do mean tiny. At least my four bed room was. The showers were ensuite, but had very little water pressure. The breakfast was the standard toast and tea and there was something a little grimy around the edges. I got the party vibe from the place so I guess if you're into that and saving money than this is probably the place for you. If you require more cleanliness and a little more rigidity to your home, I would go for the Kinlay House or the Sleepzone.
Barnacles Quay Street House can be found in one of the oldest areas of Galway. Today Quay Street has developed into the city's Latin Quarter and a lively center for culture and entertainment.
Barnacles is a 10-minute walk from all public transport, and less than a 5-minute stroll from the banks of the River Corrib as well as many of Galway's historical sites.
Unique Quality: Breakfast included, 24-hour reception, all rooms ensuite, laundry facilities, self catering facilities, internet access.
