    • Even though the main square in Galway is officially 'Kennedy Square', the locals always call it 'Eyre square'. The name never stuck. I suspect the same will happen with the Great Southern hotel. Decades from now everyone will call it the the 'great southern' without a hint of irony.

    The new owners may have a new name and some gawdy new black marble in the lobby, but it still retains the atmosphere of a grand Victorian railway hotel once you get past the entrance areas. A safe choice, but uninspired.

    • We had a very poor experience at the Great Southern. It has a wonderful location - but how they can call this a 5 star hotel is beyond me! There was a rather unpleasant stain on the bedsheets when we arrived - which they promptly replaced by another sheet with another disgusting stain. The rooms are pretty awful for a 5 star too!

    I recommend saving your money and getting the two star service somewhere else!

    This is a 4 star hotel, right on Eyre Square. It has a great location, and a great reputation. For the price, I personally prefer the Park house Hotel which is cheaper or perhaps the most beautiful boutique style hotel which is the Spanish Arch Hotel. This hotel, though a 5 star, is a bit "cold", in my opinion.
