NOT the great Southern Hotel

Even though the main square in Galway is officially 'Kennedy Square', the locals always call it 'Eyre square'. The name never stuck. I suspect the same will happen with the Great Southern hotel. Decades from now everyone will call it the the 'great southern' without a hint of irony.

The new owners may have a new name and some gawdy new black marble in the lobby, but it still retains the atmosphere of a grand Victorian railway hotel once you get past the entrance areas. A safe choice, but uninspired.

Very Bad Experience at Great Southern Hotel, Galwa

We had a very poor experience at the Great Southern. It has a wonderful location - but how they can call this a 5 star hotel is beyond me! There was a rather unpleasant stain on the bedsheets when we arrived - which they promptly replaced by another sheet with another disgusting stain. The rooms are pretty awful for a 5 star too!

I recommend saving your money and getting the two star service somewhere else!

4 star hotel, but recommend to stay elsewhere

This is a 4 star hotel, right on Eyre Square. It has a great location, and a great reputation. For the price, I personally prefer the Park house Hotel which is cheaper or perhaps the most beautiful boutique style hotel which is the Spanish Arch Hotel. This hotel, though a 5 star, is a bit "cold", in my opinion.

More about Hotel Meyrick

Elegant and convenient

by TripAdvisor Member Abbey_H

The Great Southern's lobby was still decorated for the holidays when my mother and I arrived and it looked beautiful and elegant. Since we were staying for five nights, we were upgraded to an executive room on the second floor. The room was quite impressive, with high ceilings and a chandelier. Though we overlooked the construction work taking place in Eyre Square, it was still very enjoyable. It can get quite noisy around 2 AM, especially near the end of the week, though.
The location is great--a short distance from shopping areas and attractions, and just down the street from the bus/train station and tourist information center. This hotel is a steal during the winter months!

Fantastic

This really is a splendid hotel. It is in a fantastic location, and our room, although at the front of the hotel was quiet. The staff were helpful and friendly and the hot tub on the roof, over looking the bay was just wonderful!!!! Would highly recommend it, and when the building work has been completed at Eyre Square ( the square on which the hotel overlooks) it really will be a fabulous place to stay!!

LOVED THIS HOTEL

My sister and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights this month and we loved it! The room was very clean and spacious. The beds were very comfortable, but it had only the comforter, no other blankets on the bed, but the room was warm, so that didn't matter much.
The location was fantastic, right on the square, and there is construction outside, but it was not really a problem.
The hotel staff was very efficent and extremely helpful with directions and advice.
The food in the bar was really good, the service was pretty fast and the prices weren't that bad.
I would highly recommend this hotel.

We spent 4 nighta at the Great Southern and had a great experience! The hotel is in a great location and within walking distance to many points of interest. We stayed in the Junior suite, which was georgous and very spacious. It had a very large bathroom with separate tub and shower, a large armoire, wonderful bed and a great seating area. We were very well taken care of! We decided to upgrade at the last minute, and we were happy we did! We only paid an extra 50 euro a night- which was well worth it!
The staff was great and quite pleasant. We had a fantastic time!

not so great southern hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

Small dank room in rear of hotel overlooking dumpster. Could not get hot water out of bathroom sink had to wait about twenty minutes to get steady hot water out of shower. Extreme noise outside cursing yelling fighting from dusk to dawn. After three nights of no sleep looked down at a sharp angle and saw a garbage strewn ramp filled with people smoking drinking and making a lot of noise. This ramp apeared to be the after hours hang out for people who worked at hotel. The gentleman at the front desk showed no concern what so ever and told me there was nothing he could do because I was above the rear entrance to the bar. later the manager moved to an executive room wich was not clean and had broken floor tiles in the bathroom. Breakfest was excellant and was standard hotel price of 15 Euros. Definetly not a 5 star hotel, would never stay again.

Lovely stay downtown

We had a beautiful room here overlooking Eyre Square. The accomodations were great and the location superb. I did notice the walls seemed quite thin; this was annoying if you had a loud neighbor as we did. It was hard getting to sleep. The dining room and the food were great and the spa quite relaxing. I would recommend this hotel but be prepared to bring ear plugs. There could have been a bit more attention to detail. It was very convenient to anything going on in Galway City and good walking distance to all the sites.

In the center of things

[...] We visited the Great Southern Hotel in Galway for 4 nights in May, 2006. We treated ourselves to a suite on the 5th floor executive level and were delighted with our choice. The room was very spacious. and every morning we just had to go a few feet to have our continental breakfast in the excutive lounge. The staff at the hotel was extremely helpful. The hotel sat on the newly renovated Eyre's Square which is a excellent central location in Galway. When we returned from our day of touring we sipped complimentary sherry in the lobby while we watched the fire roar. There was a pub adjacent to the hotel which was a nice plus on those evenings when it rained and one didn't want to walk very far.
