    Kinlay House Hostel

I booked a dorm bed at Kinlay Hostel a few weeks before coming to Galway. The reason I chose Kinlay Hostel is because the location seemed to be good, they had got good reviews, they had female dorms with lookers and breakfast was included.

Kinlay Hostel is a large hostel with a big variety of dorms and private rooms. I stayed in a 6-bed female dorm with a bathroom. The toilet and shower was in the bathroom but the sink was in the dorm (which I didn’t like). Where I slept there was no reading light but at the two other bunk beds there were. Linen is provided and under the bed there were lookers. For the lookers you need your own padlock.

There is a kitchen which was very busy in the evening. In the morning you can’t use the kitchen, but the hostel serves a good and well organized breakfast which is included in the price. There were bread and scones, butter and jam, cereals and muesli, milk and juice, coffee and tea, and apples. I’m not sure at what time breakfast is served, but one morning I came to the kitchen already at 7am and it was ready.

There is a chill out area, and besides free Wi-Fi there are three computers to use, which I liked as I don’t have a laptop or iPad and I don’t bring my phone when I travel.

At the hostel you can book tours to Cliffs of Moher and to Connemara.

I paid 19 Euro per night (February 2013).

Directions: Only a few minutes away from the coach station and train station.

Located on Eyre Square, this place is clean, near everything (more or less), the buses to the Aran Islands(also a must see) pick you up right in front. Nice people, good sized kitchen.

Unique Quality: Plenty of coffee for Breakfast and a choice of spreads for your toast. Also offers cereal and juice. That is a biggie when you're traveling cheap! The people who work there will hang out with people staying there. They are all really nice even if you make a total ass of yourself one drunken night. Plus, they have a safe behind the counter to hold passports, etc. Very helpful.

Round the corner from town central

There wasn't anything hugely spectacular about this hostel, but it was clean and available. The rooms were co-ed, and it was the first time that no one else in the room spoke english - an interesting if somewhat isolating experience. The kitchen was large but skinny, so it was a little hard to get around in it when a lot of people were trying to use it. But they set up a breakfast buffet line, which was really cool, and it didn't take long at all to get fed and out in the morning.

Unique Quality: I had to move out of the previous night's hostel many hours before I could enter my room in this one - a common occurance. But Kinlay house has a locked safe room where you can leave your things until check-in time rolls around.

(Do you like this tip? Please rate it, thanks!)

Directions: From the bus station, turn left toward Eyre Square. Turn left again and walk past a huge hotel. When you get to the end of the walkway, cross the road, and then turn left. Kinlay House is just around the corner to the right.

    Great Hostel

This used to be myfavorite hostel, until I discovered the Sleepzone. Still, it has some good qualities. Right on the square and across the street from the Aran Island Tourist building. About five minutes from the train and bus station. Clean, big kitchen, laundry room, bathrooms ensuite, efficient staff, and a good lounge area.

Directions: Right off of Eyre Square and across the street from the Aran Island Tourist Office.

    €15 - €40

    depending on your sharing arrangements

Unique Quality: Very central right on Eyre Square, the hostel was comfortable although it's a long walk up those stairs to the reception. There are lots of backpackers here and you can drink your beers in the common room.

This youth hostel is very well organised and clean. It's a pleasure to stay there and I'd recommend it anytime.

It is also very central but then again, Galway is small enough that this doesn't really make a huge difference.
