Sights on the way from Dublin to Galway

by globetrotting_man

We're going to be driving from Dublin to Galway on a weekday in late August. Couple questions: How long would it take if we just drove straight through. Are there any "must stop and see" sights along the way? Thanks!

You will find route and estimated drive times here:

http://www.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/

The site estimates 2h 16m (new motorway sections) but always allow more for potential traffic congestion etc.

Can't advise about sights on the way, I'm afraid....been a long time since I drove that route and the motorway has changed things. But if you have time you could detour to pretty Loughrea and/or Athenry (the latter just before you get to Galway). It's a fascinating little town, still partially walled.

it takes 2 hours to drive from dublin to galway. there are 2 toll road bridges on the way. first toll costs around 2.80 (i think) the second costs 1.90euro. be careful on the motorway as it drops to a dual carrigeway around Athlone, after exit 8. Also you could detour and have a look at Clonmacnoise, i think its exit 6 just before athlone. Athlone is a nice country town too. There is a distillery in Kilbeggan also. Happy journey

Travel Tips for Galway

Spend a few nights in the pubs....

by sabsi

...there are loads of them!! Galway isn't a place which is full of tourists because of sights - it's full because of the pubs and the atmosphere basically!

The nicest one seems to be the Quays, very stylish interieur design! I really like the King's Head, too though.

Galway hookers...

by iaint

On our first afternoon in Galway, whilst walking through some of the quaint city streets, my girlfriend asked where we would find Galway hookers...

At first I thought it was some kind of trick question, but didn't quite know how to respond. Her English is fluent, but it is her 3rd language, so mistakes can happen.

Eventually, after some tentative questioning, I discovered that she'd read in her guide book about them. More puzzled, I took a look for myself.

Turns out its a traditional type of rowing boat used for fishing!

Good news is we found some down by the Claddagh, and didn't have to try to find a red light district...

If you can get the chance do...

by greebo

If you can get the chance do drive along the coast road at sunset. It is well worth seeing the sight of the setting sun reflecting off the sea and spreading the last rays of light over the rocky burren, a majestic sight indeed. The shadows amongst the rocks creating a lunar landscape of mystical beauty.

Another classic

by sabsi about The King's Head

The best night of my recent stay in Galway I had in the King's Head. I had been there before 15 years ago and it was great to come back. The Guinness was tasty, the live band was great that night and we all were pretty much in a drinking mood. Too bad we had to get up at 3.30 the next morning to drive to Shannon Airport so I had to take it easy on the Guinness unfortunately.

Fresh Seafood

by highlandlaura about McDonagh's Seafood Bar

Wonderful place! Packed with tourists, shoulder to shoulder! Great seafood and wine! An International crowd here! Hope I can return soon! Any of the seafood selections are wonderful! Whatever you choose, enhance the flavor with a glass of white wine! Verrrry COZY bar.
