This is a unique building for sure, but the staff and service are bad. my friend and I arrived in the afternoon and the place was empty. we tried the phone number a few times but no one answered. eventually we left and gambled on leaving our bags to go for a walk. when we finally got checked in we mentioned the inconvenience of having had to wait for so long and were told essentially that 'that's just how it is' - I think the person checking us in was the owner and we thought he was rude.
everything was pretty good overnight and the other guests were nice. the room was kind of dirty and it doesn't feel like there's a lot of good energy in the place. maybe this was just the effect of not being received very nicely.
This is a wonderful hostel. Travelling from the UK and this is my second time to stay. Reading some of the negative comments, I have to wonder if we stayed in the same place! Granted, 2 years ago the place was still wonderful, but was a little dustier in the common areas on the Walls. The bedrooms have always been spotless though, and the whole place was repainted since. The atmosphere here is brilliant. It is not 5 star but I would rather a fire and good company than a telly! You can get bikes at the hostel and explore the area.
Unique Quality: Great breakfast and open fires. Private rooms available.
This Hostel is in the Village of Letterfrack, and as the name suggests is an Old Monastery building. We have visited before, and this time we were four. The hostel is very unusual and has open fires and quaint old bric a brac in all room. Sometimes it had cobwebs, but it had been painted up. We are glad to see the bric a brac replaced so it has paint now AND it has the charm. The village is a minute by walking and so is The Diamond Mountain. Breakfast is at 9am and is part of the price to stay (Egg, homemade Irish bread and scone, oatmeal porridge, fruit). It was very relaxing and enjoyable. While it is not the newest of bed and room, it has this charm that is all its own. Nine out of Ten marks!
Unique Quality: Views, Fireplace, decoration, best bathroom in the world for atmosphere (you must see!)
Directions: Coming from Clifden, turn right at Bard Den Pub, pass church and it is there.
