Small Town - Great Castle
The small town of Oughterard, 27 km along the main road from Galway to Clifden, calls itself the "Gateway to Connemara."
And sure enough, immediately west of town, the countryside opens up to sweeping panoramas of lakes, mountains, and bogs that get more spectacular the further west you travel. Oughterard itself is a pleasant little town due to it's proximity to Lough Corrib.
Most travellers are just passing through, as the coast is a mere hour's drive from here.
