More about Sheen Falls Lodge

Sheen Falls - Disappointment!

by TripAdvisor Member vincek1

I just came back from a trip to Ireland. We stayed at Sheen Falls for 2 nights. The grounds & the hotel are beautiful! The food and service were not. We ate at Oscars on our first night. It was the worst meal of our entire trip. The service was equally bad. I had to finally search for the waitress to get assistance. The decor of the restaurant was also sub-standard. Most of the staff appear to be Eastern European and very inexperienced. I didn't get a warm feeling from any of the staff. We were never even greeted at the door when we arrived at the hotel! At the price that is being charged, it is inexcusable. A hotel of with comparable prices would be the Mandarin Oriental chain. Sheen falls is not even in the same league. The room facilities were also not great. The hair dryer couldn't blow out a candle. Some of the lights were burned out. The shower glass did not cover enough area so therefore, the water ends up all over the floor.

Beautiful hotel

I stayed for 4 nights at Sheen Falls Lodge last November and had the most fantastic time. Unfortunately while I was there a problem with the pool meant it was very cold, but apart from that it was perfect. The staff were so helpful and friendly and treated us very well, and despite being a high class hotel it managed to still be relaxed. The surroundings and views are fabulous and I can't wait to go back. If you are looking for somewhere to totally relax for a few days then you can't go wrong with this hotel.

Almost Perfect - but not quite

by TripAdvisor Member IlViaggio

Almost everything about Sheen Falls is wonderful. It is run by very nice people, the food was terrific, the location wonderful. Only one complaint. The decor in the rooms (at least the ones we had) was horrifying. Though the room was spacious and had a nice view, the furniture and headboard looked cheap beyond belief, made of fake wood and the bead spread was covered in cutesy sheep. Horrors. Someone had better take a good look at the docor and upgrade it to reflect the overall tone that the hotel tries to set, at those prices I do not want to look at sheep.

Treated Like royality but Spa and food lacking.

March 2006.
My husband suprised me with a trip to sheen fallls for my birhtday. I was very excited about going as I have wanted to go to sheen falls for years. Our expectations were very high as we had alot of reports that this was the best hotel in Ireland.
On our arrival after lunch our room wasn't ready which didn't put us off we left our luggage with front desk and went to the bar for a late lunch.
We found the food menu available in the bar very limited and nothing really appealed I was expecting really exciting things on the menu for a 5 star hotel. We ended up with two boring sandwichs..
We eventually got into our room at 3pm which had a balcony overlooking sheen falls this was lovely. The room was spacious and clean with a huge bed. The most amazing part of this room was you had a little hall inside your room and then another door which made the room completely sound proof a first in any hotel i have stayed in you never heard anyone going up and down the corridors.Or no running water from any where how did they manage this??
We ate in the La Cascade restuarant on the Friday night we found the menu quiet poor for choices again. Unfortunately I don't eat fish and that left me with all of two choices. The food when it came was nice but not mind blowing. The service was absoluely brillant this was also shown at breakfast which is run very smoothly they all know there jobs and do them really well.
The spa was the biggest let down it was two rooms attached to the leisure section. Since it was a spa package we had booked again we had highexpextations of the spa. We had booked in for three treatments each one of my treatments was an indian head massage she actually didn't touch my head she ended up massaging my face and my arms and hands??
The pool area is small but nice. The sauna has a lot of rotten wood in there with nails exposed. the lesiure section definitley needs updating.
Best parts of sheen falls are the people they are lovely. The service is top class.
Our least favourite things about sheen falls is the spa very disappointing and the food.
we did have an absolutely fanatastic meal in kenmare on the saturday night in mulcahys which was recommended by the hotel.

Absolutely amazing!

If you are visiting the Kenmare area - Sheen Falls is a must! We were able to get a last minute rate - which was still somewhat pricey for Ireland this time of year - but we found it to be well worth it. Our room was spacious, beautiful, comfortable and romantic - we had a view of the falls and a bathtub big enough to drown in! The breakfast was very good - probably the best on our entire trip. Even better were the grounds and the service - we were treated like royalty and all of the amentities made this hotel a 5* indeed. Plus the town of Kenmare is absultely adorable and the food was fantastic.

Fabulous hotel - forget the other reviews!

by TripAdvisor Member BALLYWILLIAM2002

We have just returned from a two night stay in the Sheen Falls hotel. I looked at the reviews on Friday before we went for our weekend and was terribly surprised to read some of the reviews - it seemed that the first page of reviews were all non complimentary and so with a shudder I read no further and decided to see for ourselves and since we were heading down there that evening, there really wasnt a whole pile I could do about it. Arriving into Kenmare late on Friday night I decided that the best thing to do in order to get directions to the hotel was to ring, and spoke to a very helpful front office/receptionist named Siobhan. Directions were perfect and within minutes we arrived at the hotel. Bags were taken from us - car was parked and an extremely swift check-in had Siobhan escorting us to our beautiful room and giving us directions to the bar/restaurant/leisure centre etc. en-route. Magnificent room overlooking waterfall - very large and beautifully laid out with a lovely sitting area in front of the TV - we relaxed and slept very comfortably in the largest bed I have ever slept in! Ordered room service breakfast (latest times were between 10 - 11...I put a note in the comment section the night previous could they bring the b/fast as late as possible and at exactly 11am it arrived) everything hot and exactly as ordered. We went off for the day driving and arrived back to the hotel that evening and went into the cozy bar and had a great chat with a senior bar man (forget his name but was from Sligo originally I think) gave us lots of information aboutthe hotel and the drinks etc. I was having a Cosmopolitan and he explained that they make them differently there and brought out the Pinkey Vodka bottle to me to have a look at it and explained that Madonna drinks same when I told him I had never heard of it - a very entertaining guy and a credit to the hotel. We got ready for dinner then and arrived at La Cascade for same and were seated swiftly. Lovely meal - only fault I had was that as soon as the starter was taken from us, the staff literally laid it on the table behind us and immediately put the main course on the table - would have liked at least a few minutes inbetween but...if that is the only complaint we had...then we were doing just great! We ordered a 2nd bottle of their house wine which was absolutely beautiful and when we had finished coffees etc. the waiter brought the bottle and our glasses out to the bar for us. The attention to detail in the hotel together with a fantastic staff (location and hotel itself are superb) make this wonderful hideaway the most beautiful place in Kerry we have ever stayed in. I think that from reading the previous mentionted reviews, my opinion that you just cannot please some people is just so true. Well done Patrick (manager), Siobhan (fantastic lady on reception) and all the staff on a wonderful experience in the Sheen Falls Hotel - try if for yourself - dont rely on the previous reviews!

Falling standards

Have stayed in the Sheen Falls for the last two years for a two night break. We eat in the hotel one night and in Kenmare town the second night. Last year the food and service was so good we considered staying in the hotel again for the second night and probably would have done had we not already booked Packie's in Kenmare. This year the evening meal was a huge dissapointment, no comparison at all to last year. We subsequently found out that the Chef had gone to Doonbeg! Pity.
Other than this the waiting staff need to smile a little more, they are efficient but not exactly pleasant.
The hotel in itself is majestic, superb scenery and location. Rooms are top class.
Next year - will we return? - Undecided as yet, may try the Brehon in killarney.

Theres better 4 star hotels out there

I have to agree pretty much with NJs comments below. We visited Sheen Falls for our 1st anniversary. The actual hotel & grounds are lovely and its fantastic waking up to the sound of the waterfall and getting a great breakfast in the huge 7ft wide bed.
Unfortunately, the Oscars restaurant, bar service & food were definitely nowhere near 5 star.
We had to go up to the staff in the bar to get service, and were largely ignored in the restaurant with the staff appearing to favour larger groups of Americans. The food, when it eventually came, was below par to the extent that I suffered an allergic reaction immediately afterwards. I have never suffered from allergies before, although I wouldn't want to necessarily blame food poisoning.
With our bad experience, I thought the hotel might discount the meal, but no, they tried to overcharge on this and on other items. (Make sure you keep your bar receipts)
If you want a good lunch or dinner in Kenmare, go instead to the Lansdown Arms.!

Service with Style

What a place, friendly welcome, excellent Bar service - Martin (Bar Manager) really knows his stuff - cocktails and what a whiskey range, everything you could imagine.
Geat food and wine selection is amazing - 950+ different bottles - got an amazing chablis for 38 euro.
Good efficient front desk, friendly management presence.
Really enjoyed our stay - will be back, so peaceful in the large bedrooms with the view of the falls.

I was awe struck!

We stayed for a week and loved every minute of this beautiful dream hotel. I went fly fishing with an old Irish man from the hotel and the spa was great. Loved the food. I have told all our family they have to go. And the bell men would drive us to Kenmar for a day of shopping and return to pick us up. What service! Our room over looked the falls. Breath taking! I will be back!

Car hire companies

by Laneyh

Hi

Anyone know if there are any car hire companies in Kenmare
I will be attending a wedding at Sheen Falls but would like to do some sightseeing afterwards.

I've been trying to look online but the closest car hire place seems to be in Killarney.

Any ideas ?

We recently spent 5 days around that area but flew into Cork and flew out from Shannon. Got a great price with Budget online (pick-up at Cork). Are you flying and how would you be getting to Kenmare?
Its not a long drive from Cork to Kenmare and you can go via Blarney Castle!

Kenmare is a fairly smallish town and don't remember seeing any rental agencies.

You're very generous to call Kenmare a town ;-)

Killarney is the main town in that part of Kerry for the usual shops and services, but Kenmare is only 20 miles away from it, so it's not as remote as you might think.
