Purchases

by jmmcmanu

I will be living in Killarney for a few months and I am stuggling to pack a suitcase! Is it easy to purchase things such as hairdryers, shampoo and conditioner and FOOD? I can't seem to find a grocery store on any websites!

Also, how is travel? I'm not needed to sight see, but more so - get around!

Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

Killarney is a fairly big town. You shouldn't have trouble finding shops. My guess is there's a good bus system for getting around. We had a car while there, but most Irish towns have good transport.

You make it sound like you're travelling to an isolated log cabin in the middle of nowhere :-).

And to answer your question: No, it is no problem whatsoever to buy food in Killarney, or shampoo and conditioner, or any other daily necessities for that matter. Even hairdryers will be readily available.

And here is a website with a selection of shops: http://www.killarneytown.com/business/shopping.php -including food stores ;-)

Anything you need to buy is readily available in Ireland, and Killarney is a lovely place. People are nice and helpful .Public transportation is good inIreland, and for sure they have grocery stores.

There is a big Tesco and a Super Valu just outside the town centre and Dunnes Stores is in the town itself... you could do with a car if you want to go out of the town. Killarney may be in the country but they do sell the usual modern conveniences there ;))

On the Net- www.tesco.ie- one of the main supermarket chains in Ireland. There will be others too.
Transport From Killarney isn't bad, Buses to nearby stuff in the county, Express Buses to Galway, Limerick and Cork, trains to Dublin. Killarney itself is small enough to walk or cycle around.

Travel Tips for Killarney

Boat trip on the lakes

by healy_ger

I often take the boat out on the lakes. Only fishing boats are allowed on the lakes, (with the exception of a water bus ~ 60 seats). This means that it can be nice and quiet while on the boat. The pocture below shows Torc mountain taken on the boat on the Muckross side of the Ross peninsula.

Beehive-huts on Dingle island

by globetrott

Beehive-huts are another great attraction that you may see, when driving along the Atlantic-Drive of Dingle Peninsula : These buildings date back hundreds of years, but the exacte dates are unknown.
When you drive on Slea Head Drive - the circle-road west of Dingle-town, you will pass by many of these antique buildings. All of them were built on private land and so you have to pay a small entrance-fee to the land-owner, when you want to enter there. Mostly it is just 1 Euro, that makes still quite a good side-income for the local farmers.
You better carefully watch your step !!Most of these beehive-huts are situated on meadows with plenty of sheep, who never care a lot, where they powder their noses...

Killarney National Park

by tvdm

Visit Killarney National Park. Wander off in the beautiful forest and see Muckross Park plus the Gap of Dunloe right on its fringes.
Ireland has very few forests but this is one truly is a gem. Closeby are the lakes (pic) and hiking around the shores is wonderful.

Atlantic Ocean

by bluesmama

The tour took us all the way out to the Atlantic Ocean. I have a thing for the sea. Maybe it is because I'm from Denmark surrounded by the sea everywhere. But there's something so soothing about the sound of the sea and the gulls and the smell of the salty air. It feels like home...

a good step in ireland!

by guiiillaume

i don't have a lot of reminds about this town but iremember very well that we climed at the carrantuohill mount which around 30 km from killarney. it's the highest top of ireland ( 1040m)
Unfortunatelly, it's very bad indicated, you must have a lot of luck to find it.
it's about 6 hours to go at the top and come back to the car.
there's a nice national park around the town too.
