pub and thrift shop recommendation

by jerseygirl3200

Hi! My family and I are taking a tour of Ireland. We're going to spend two days in Killarney. Would anyone know if there is any thrift shops in the town? Also, can someone recommend a good pub to check out? Thanks so much!

There are pubs in Ireland all over the place and checking them out is one of the fun things to do. What's the fuss with the thrifts shops -- are you preparing for your baggage not arriving in Ireland? ;-)

There is a great little thrift shop adjacent to the parking lot.that is just down from the church. (On the main road through Killarney that would take you down to Muckross or Ross Castle) There is a street that divides the parking lot. Go into the left parking lot. Facing the town the church on your left and across the street the grocery store - the thrift shop will be straight ahead on your left. You also might want to check out the sweater outlet that is kitty corner across from Buckleys for great buys on woolens.

Buckley's pub has locals that bring different instruments each nite - great fun.

You should enjoy Courtneys on College st. it's a casual bar, usually plays good music and has a traditional irish feel to it with wooden floors and stone walls. I go there almost every Saturday night and it's normally pretty busy. I would recommend the granary bar near the tourist office for live music and as a late bar. Similar in athmosphere to Courtneys. The Laurels is also a good option.

My family and I enjoy shopping in the thrift stores. You never know what you can find there.

Hi,
well, it's as good a reason to visit this beautiful country as any other reason! Enjoy your stay and lots of good bargain-hunting!

Winfried, who likes to shop for wine and for this finds Ireland rather unattractive :-)

Travel Tips for Killarney

Respect the Republicans

by mrdarius

One night, we were at a bar called Tatler Jack's which you can read about in my restaurant tips. The last song of the night for the performers was "A Nation Once Again."

Since we were sitting up front, we didn't realize until the song was half way through that everyone in the pub was standing. We felt a little strange when one youth began Sieg Heil-ing to the band.

Now while I doubt that this happens very often, you probably want to steer clear of insulting Republican sentiments late at night in rowdy bars.

Inch beach

by tvdm

This is a good one! You'll see Inch beach from your touring bus or car on the way from Killarney to Dingle, but few people actually stop to stroll the entire length of it. In summertime, you'll find many people (locals and travellers) relaxing here, but it's still something of a peaceful haven between the tourist spots all around.

Muckross house & gardens
If you have to take a jaunting car trip this is the one to do , it costs 35euro (and that’s for a family of 4) for the whole circuit, which takes in muckross abbey , Muckross house & gardens and torc waterfall, now the reason this trip is better than the others is, they will stop at all these points to allow you to get out and have a look around, the jarvey men are very laid back and have great knowledge about the area so you can ask all the questions you like. The tour of the house is worth taking, you would be forgiven for believing that some old ms havershim type character still lives here (although she would be of the dusting variety as this place is gleaming) I don’t like to include too much info on places as I tend to think part of the reason we vist s is to find out the details for ourselves.. But I can’t resist telling you that these gardens were commissioned in honour of queen victoria’s visit here and cost £30,000 Imagine at that time ,spending this type of money on a garden , I thought long and hard before parting with £600 for my little patio :~) seriously though, its acres of amazing plants and greenery and camera at the ready for the rose garden to the rear of the house.

ladies view

the view from here is great but but there are some just as nice (if not better along the drive (if you are comming in from killarney) there are plenty of places to stop the car so get out get off the roas and bring your camera.

"Killarney National Park"

There are lots of things to do in Killarney. The most enjoyable to me was visiting the National Park!
Killarney town is a super-tourist mecca, full of shops selling leprachaun-fested items. Spend your days enjoying the Loughs, mountains, Torc waterfall, and the castle and monastic ruins. Evenings spent in town enjoying the pubs are great fun!
