More about The Fairview

Outstanding!

by TripAdvisor Member golfwesty

I recently spent 3 nights here--June 18 thru June 20. I had made the booking 6 months ago and will confess to some trepidations since after reading some of the negative reviews. I decided to keep the booking and am happy to say that was an extremely good decision.

The room was absolutely spotless. The hardwood floors shined and the entire room was spotless upon check-in and every day thereafter. The bathroom was spotless too. The hall music was subdued and was only on during the day.

Parking was not a problem. The hotel has an agreement with the City for use of a lot just a stones throw from the property. When checking in you park outside the front door of the hotel and unload your bags. You then take your car about 100 yards down the street and park it. Very convenient. I don't think some prior reviewers understand that this is a guesthouse and is literally in the center of town.

In addition to being a quality property the location is just about the best in the entire town. Even the "name" hotels (Killarney Park and the Great Southern) aren't as conveniently centrally located. Great shops and pubs right at the doorstep.

It was also very apparent to me that this is an extremely well managed property. The General Manager/Owner, Mr. James O'Neill seemed to be everywhere. He checked us in on a Sunday afternoon, was there in the morning, and seemed to be very "involved" in every aspect of the operation. Very impressive. And Mr. O'Neill's staff are all outstanding. I already mentioned the quality of the housekeeping. It was first-rate. While I did not take an evening meal in the restaurant, the breakfasts were outstanding as was the restaurant staff.

I wholeheartedly agree with the immediate prior reviewer. If you are staying in Killarney, this is most definately the place to stay.

It's nice to be important but more important to be nice

Sorry for those of you who enjoyed this place but we had a terrible experience, which the soft lighting and shiny floors could not disguise. We arrived, hot and tired from the 4 hour train journey from Dublin, at 2-45pm to be turned away by one of the most condesending men we have ever met ( stage right the manager Mr Rude) He ignored us when we first arrived and when he did finally grace us with his presence at Reception he told us we could not check in until 4pm !!!! We could not believe that such a late check in time existed and when we questioned it not being on the website or email booking confirmation, he said "Did you not ask ?" He then said to come back at 3-30pm as he may be able to let us have our room then. It was a boiling hot day and we had some travel bags with us, do you think he offered to let us leave the bags there ? No.... or even offer us a place to sit and wait for our room ? No.... We did not want to stay there after this but on the email confirmation they did remember to include the fact that you cannot cancel the booking with 72 hours of arrival ! So it was either go back or lose out on 140 Euros.... Anyway we went back and the place is nice but what this owner needs to realise that it is not about attempt at posh decor, it is about the whole experience, which we believe the welcome being the MOST important. .

Misleading advertising

by A TripAdvisor Member

We were profoundly disappointed after booking a room having been assured over the phone as well in the print advertisement that the guest house had parking on site. We arrived to find that this was not the case and that the nearest parking was at least 300 metres up the road, away from the city centre. When we explained to the hotel manager James that we needed parking on site due to my parents' medical conditions, he demanded to see a disability certificate. To cut a painful story short, the manager was rude and evasive. He contradicted himself throughout our conversation and was embarrassingly unprofessional. We were relieved to cancel our booking.

Lovely but sleepless hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Hickorygirl

This is lovely hotel next to a backpackers hostel. While the decor of this hotel is beautiful and very comfortable, it is sad that it has to be located right next door to a backpackers hostel. The weather was very hot and this hotel does not have air conditioning, so we had to keep the windows open. The first night I saw several beer kegs being delivered to the hostel outside our window and I knew we were in for it. Both nights we were kept awake with extremely loud drunks till 4:00 A.M. The second night I had to call the front desk to tell them to call the police to send two screaming mates outside our window away. If you are the type of person who could sleep through ANYTHING, then maybe this is the place for you.

As for all the other posts about the owner, yes they are correct, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. He could use some lessons in how to at least ACT pleasant. On the phone and in person I was always made to feel I was bugging him. He could maybe use some fiber in his diet.

Nice Room, fair breakfast

by TripAdvisor Member Nevada_Terry

Our room was nice. We were impressed by the hardwood floors. Both the room and bathroom were very clean. The dinning room was nice and the breakfast fine. If you are paying by credit card in a currency other then Euros, be careful. The owner charged our card in dollars without asking. Parking was not an issue for us as we were traveling by bus.

Get a booking confirmation Number

Never got to stay in the Fairvew because when we arrrived we were told we were not booked in and met a highy indignant Receptionist who basically told us we had no booking and now please leave. The manager did his very best to relocate us but what happened to the customer being always right, his secretary took the booking and he told us she was very effiecent therefore again telling us that we made no booking simply not good enough. He did get us somewhere else but at tthat point we were so annoyed we went home.
So if you want to stay in this bed and breafast get a booking confirmation number.

Need lesson in Customer Service!

by TripAdvisor Member pbm5q

We had a terrible experience with the staff at the Fairview this summer. We had booked it by telephone on the recommendation of a friend 8 weeks prior to our trip. When our travel plans had to be altered four weeks before we were to arrive, we rang and cancelled (well within their cancellation policy time). Low and behold, our credit card was charged for 2 nights stay! Again we rang to enquire. We had a telephone record of our cancellation, but the manager stated "how am I to know if you didn't just ring to confirm?" All in all, he was very rude and unhelpful and refused to refund the money.

Nice hotel, weird owner

by TripAdvisor Member Birdman33

First off I would like to say that this is a very nice hotel. We had a double room, which I thought would be a queen bed, but it had a full bed and a single bed. Room is nice, but it was very warm. You could open the window, but then it was very loud. The owner is not easy to deal with. If you ask him a good place to eat, he will only recommend the restaurant in the hotel, even if you ate their ten times he will still not recommend any others . The hotel is pricey, but centrally located. One side of the hotel is above the kitchen, so if you open the window it is very loud and smells like whatever they are cooking and also is next to a hostel.

He also will charge your room to your credit card in dollars. All in all there are several hundred b&b's close by, that are better, cheaper, and quieter.

wonderful hotel

by TripAdvisor Member sschwucho

We really enjoyed our stay at the Fairview Guesthouse. The hotel was very clean. They were doing renovations so there was a bit of noise, but they only worked from about 8 am. til 5 pm. and we weren't in the room at that time. The breakfast was wonderful as well. I would heartly recommend the Fairview to anyone staying in Killarney.

Be Feared of the Fairview

by TripAdvisor Member canuckrn

After an exhausting day of travel we tried to check into the Fairview. We were told the toilet was broken in our room and could be anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. The owner offered to check us in to his other property up the street which we noticied was unacceptable. The owner was rude and disrespectful. We went out and came back 2 hours later only to be told that our toilet may not be fixed until the next day and offered to check us into another hotel blocks away. The owner was very blase about the whole experience and acted like we were lint on his pants. I told him he obviously wasn't interested in our business. He became rude and confrontational. We checked into another hotel only to find out that this happens on a daily basis and that they have a standing reservation for fairview guests. Met some other dissatisfied guests of the fairview in the restaurant who were treated rudely as well. Their room was close to the kitchen and laundry and was noisy and stinky. Stay away from this property unless you want a lot of stress and displeasure!
