What is it like weather-wise in December? Are there popular attractions which are closed? Is the weather unreasonable for a December stay?

Only if you consider wind, rain and occasional frost to be unreasonable. It's a temperate climate here.
Not sure if Kilkenny Castle is closed in December, but you could probably still explore its gardens if the castle is closed.

Depends what you're used to. I'm from England, so it was no big surprise for me. it just gave me more of an excuse to pop into all those cosy little pubs!
Take a 'jaunt' in a horse and buggy to Killarney Castle. Also tour around the Dingle Peninsula and 'Ring of Kerry', and then look down on the Lakes of Killarney The mad Irish sense of humour, their limericks, and superstitions.
Every June bank holiday, Murphys brewery sponsor a comedy festival in Kilkenny, attracting top comedians from all over the British isles and even some Americans like Dan Castellata (the guy who does Homer and Grampa in The Simpsons), George Wendt and Bill Murray. It's absolutely brilliant fun!!! :))
Every November Duiske Abbey in Graignamanagh hosts a series of concerts in the 800 year old Duiske Abbey in the centre of this riverside town. The concerts are held on Wednesday nights, three Classical music concerts and one Irish traditional music concert.
The Pumphouse is a great place to go to watch live music in Kilkenny. Traditional music sessions are held on monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during the summer months. The pub attracts a warm and welcoming crowd, and they serve good bar food too.
The Irish are renowned for their hospitality and so a night in one of the pubs can't be beaten. Many will have traditional entertainment - and more often than not, someone will start an impromptu singalong
Beware of the guinness - if you're not used to it.
