Nice place to stay in/near Kilkenny

by shpeeg

We are a family of 3 looking for a nice place to stay in/very near Kilkenny. We don't want to spend a lot. Any recommendations?

I stayed ina B&B on the outskirts of Kilkenny called the Brog Maker a few years ago. It's only about 10 minutes walk from the centre of town and is pretty reasonable. It's above a pub though so probably not a good idea to stay there if you like to go to bed early ;-)

Don't leave it too late to book! I spent two days last week fruitlessly ringing guesthouses, hotels and B&Bs around KK and everything was booked out. I ended up in Galway instead.

The Brog Maker is a nice spot Aoife. I also HIGHLY recommend Rinuccini's by the castle - a brilliant restaurant and guest rooms that beat many a hotel's standards hands down at half their cost!

I live a stone's throw from The Brog Maker, and it's a great spot. It's not one of Kilkenny's busiest pubs so shouldn't be too noisy. Along the same road (Castlecomer Road), there are numerous B&B's. My friend's parents run one called Chaplin's - I'll try find the number for you.

In the meantime have a look at this link whihc has lots of accommodation info. If you need to know anything further about a particular B&B or the area where it's situated, please let me know:

The absolute best place: the Waterside Hotel in Graiguenamanaugh (pronounced Greg-nah-mah-nah). My wife and I stayed there for a week and drove in and around the entire Kilkenny region. Centrally located. The hotel has one of the best restaurants I've EVER been in... I mean that! It's 5 stars. Website is www.watersideguesthouse.com

Not stay in Tralee. Have I made this clear??
Feel free to use it as a bus stop. There are a bunch of connection to Dingle, Dublin and Galway from this station. But don't be fooled into leaving the station. I'm still trying to erase the memories of Tralee.

City Status

by orlikins

There's a bit of a hoo-ha about Kilkenny's city status. By rights it is really too small by most standards to be even considered as a city, as its population is only about 30,000. Yet it was granted City Status by King James in 1609 (at the time Kilkenny was a powerful Norman city) but it hasnt grown as much as would be expected since. There has been talk of deregulating Kilkenny to 'Town' Status under a new Local Government Bill, which has caused a lot of controversy in Kilkenny but nowhere else :)

Now Barryg23 doesnt agree with me, but he's biased anyway ;))

Dunmore Caves

by orlikins

Dunmore caves are off the Kilkenny-Castlecomer road, its well sign-posted, but you really could do with a car to get there.

It's 2.75 entry for an adult. You get to watch videos on the history, fauna, formation and legends of the caves before descending the stairs and crossing the yard and going down the steps into the cold, creepy but strangely compelling caves.

Parts of the cave are not open to the public.

Dining Pub of the year 1999-2002

by ettenaj about Paris Texas

Noted Dining Pub of the Year 1999-2002, Paris Texas ia a welcome mixture of old fashioned pub style and contemporary customer service values.
Live music every Sunday, live traditional music every Wednesday. Great food served thoughout the day 12 noon till 10pm, cavery, a la carte, and bar food. Well worth a visit

Langtons Bar & Club

by orlikins about Langtons Bar & Club

Really cool and fashionable bar and club on John St. The club is extremely popular, so go early...get ready to queue around 10pm!! (you think I'm joking here? We had to learn the hard way!) Smart, make an effort
