A cut above the usual three star

Three star hotels sprouted everywhere during the Celtic tiger times - but this one will probably have a little more staying power than many.

The room I had was spacious with a good firm bed and powershower. The bar served Guinness and the receptionist was helpful. That ticks most of the boxes - you can't expect much else. I also like the pictures of ducks all over the place - a love of the wife of the owner who died a few years ago.

On the downside the interior design team for the public rooms could do with shooting. The lobby looks like a giant version of an indoor water feature - the sort of crappy souvenir you would bring home from a cheap two-week package holiday to Turkey. The main bar looks like it would have been trendy in 1987 if set just off the Tottenham court road - i was expecting some Tom cruise lookalike to serve me a silly cocktail with a F**king green umbrella in it.

Breakfast not up to scratch.

Surly git of a night porter wouldn't open the resident's bar until forced too by several very sober men.
